Recently I watched Rich's 2009 "Persistent Data Structures and Managed References" (to edit some on-line transcripts of his talks). He talks about the epochal time model in a lot of his talks, but I found this early one had a way of explaining the managed references that was a bit more in depth and had a couple more examples that "clicked" for me this time.
