does either airplay or chromecast allow 1080p? I have maxed out the 2 monitors on my mbp; I have a third monitor, and I can connect to it via airplay, but I only get 720p. Thus, is there an airplay, chromecast, or whatever else dongle that gets 1080p?
😞 // I have a $25.00 "anycast" dongle that supports miracast/airplay, it's laggy, but tolerable for showing documentation unfortunately, it's only 720p
and I can't justify spending $200 on this: http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/products/gxm/dh2go/digital_se/
@qqq I have 3 monitors on my MBP. 2x thunderbolt->display port and 1x hdmi->dvi
@tbaldridge: does this require special thunderbolt active display monitors? what I have is: (1) a mbp that supports itself + 2 external monitors (despite having 2 display ports + 1 hdmi) and (2) three hdmi-tvs
Nope, just a cable
I've run this setup on 2015 and 2013 mbp
Sure but I'm on my phone
I have https://support.apple.com/kb/SP704?locale=en_US -- which according to docs, supports 2 external monitors + builtin lcd. If I use some magical thunderbolt cable, can I get it to support a third?
I think those specs are wrong
now I've only done this with MBP Retinas from (late) 2012 and 2015, but this has worked for me https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Input-Output-Adapter-Cable/dp/B014I8UQJY/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1487471295&sr=1-3&keywords=HDMI+to+DVI
the secret is that Display Port, HDMI, DVI and Thunderbolt all support the same video format, so cables can convert from one to the other.
something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-DisplayPort-ThunderboltTM-Compatible/dp/B004CAHTCQ/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1487471607&sr=1-3&keywords=thunderbolt+to+dvi
I have 2 displayport -> hdmi cables; and 1 hdmi -> hdmi cable now, I can use any two of the three monitors, but if I connect all 3, one is always blank
interesting....
well, wait a sec
I'm actually using something like this https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-DisplayPort-Thunderbolt-Compatible/dp/B00C7RJQPY/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1487471720&sr=1-3&keywords=thunderbolt+to+displayport
I wonder if DisplayPort is speciaal
the annoying thing is that I can "get 3" by using: laptop, external, external if I could just do external, external, external(mirror of laptop) i'd be so happy
there's something about "active cables" and http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/111112/how-to-use-3-external-monitors-on-15-late-2013-macbook-pro-retina claiming that these monitors can only support 2 "passive"
@ashnur: (re wikiquote question in #clojurescript) -- if you figure itout, please let me know; I've been trying to parse the wikipedia xml, and the only solution I've come across so far is: install mediawiki + load the db
@ashnur: your life may be easier since it's just wikiquotes: my life was not pleasant when I read: https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2013/11/all-of-wikipedia-can-be-installed-to-your-desktop-in-just-30-hours/
there's a number of adhoc xml parsers out there, which may work on wikiquotes (due ot simpler structure), but I never got any to work well on actual wikipedia xml
there should be a universal ui for i/o that has modules for transmuting both the input and the output where the modules are platform specific optimizations
yeah; I was rather unpleasantly surprised, I thought xml was verbose/messy enough; but apparently they figured out a way to roll their own adhoc, undocumented language on top of xml
tbf i am not surprised at all, i expect nothing better from the same old idea of universality
if something is good for everything, it's good for nothing, that's my motto. one of many 😛
so, i think the order should be reversed, and your file should be explaining itself, or the file format should be specified in a way from which one could automatically deduce a parser. there is no universal file format.
http://www.kiwix.org/downloads/ <-- wikiquote is there, though not sure if latest
although there is that very nice new one "the burden of the brutalized is not to comfort the bystander"
kiwix also have an Emacs extension for searching.
@qqq https://github.com/attardi/wikiextractor have you tried this? maybe it doesn't help, but i am going around trying everything now
@tbaldridge: it appears even after getting 2 "active" displayport -> hdmi converters, this particlar mbp only gives me 2 screens and just refuses to power a third external monitor
@qqq that stinks, must be something to do with the 2014 model. Kindof glad I never ran into that 😐
Well the other option is USB->DVI connectors, those appear as new display devices (cards), they're slow, and super crappy for video, but I've heard they work okay for code.
@tbaldridge: this is expected given that the official apple webpage spec for my laptop says it only supports 2 ; but there were all these rumors on youtube/forums talking about "yeah, they mean only 2 passive; if you get active it works, blah blah blah" so I had to try 🙂
any usb -> dvi you recommend? all the ones I find on amazon are windows only, while the osx ones are all < 3/5 stars
what are you air-playing to?
I'm pretty sure my AppleTVs all run at 1080p, although I've never tested
and no I've never used the USB->DVI stuff, just seen them in use a few places
I have a sony bravia 55" 1920x1080 if I connect it via hdmi, I get 1920x1080 if I conenct it to my mbp via airplay, I get only 720p
I'm conecting the sony bravia to a : https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B019RN8M82/
