Well then it's his choice in the end, but if he's trying to build a portfolio.. if I saw code like that I'd have second thoughts about the applicant

Software engineering is a lot more than just programming, and to me it looks like your friend doesn't understand that

Yeah he's self employed

So it is a company project

(has employees under him and his own business)

If i was applying to work for him, and I saw that code, I'd back out

Especially if that was his reaction
