There was a time (a while back) when there was a lot of discussion about moving off slack due to 10K history restriction and also fear that slack would cut off as membership went past 5K. Did ryver come up in any of that and if so, was there any consensus on it vs slack?

It's come up before, several times, never with any consensus.

i can tell you one thing, slack's lack of indentation/reply-to-message makes it really hard to follow a conversation

They have no intent to thread conversations yet; if you're wanting to isolate a single thread, your best bets are to find or make an appropriate room, or form an ad hoc group chat to spin it off (which does remove discoverability of the conversation).

Usually it's only hard to follow in dense, generic rooms, e.g. #clojure and #clojurescript

you could always talk in bold and make it easy to see your conversations 🙂

I would also like the ability to /ignore people.

Given Slack was designed for a workplace environment, blocking people would lead to fundamental organizational breakdown; I doubt that's a feature they will be adding.

I mentioned this because a lab here is giving ryver a try instead of slack - under a mistake in understanding the terms of slack free variant. Using it now for a little bit, while it seems a bit more clunky, it seems to have most (all?) the aspects of slack. I haven't checked the restrictions for free variant though...

OK, I can answer my own comment - it looks to be 'universally free' and 'uncrippled'.
