you can install almost all distro's to a USB stick

you may want to label the f/s on it, and use LABEL=${name} (replace ${name} with the label you give it, of course) in the /etc/fstab though, if the distro doesn't use the unique id to mount it, though

you might want also prefer to try one of the more live-CD oriented distro's like Knoppix, to avoid the potentially slow read/write speed of USB

IIRC, Knoppix has some smarts to let you update it, add new packages, save the changes to your $HOME, etc
