Hmmm has anyone here attended strange loop before?

tomfaulhaber05:04:18

do you have a question? It's awesome!

urbanslug05:04:18

So I was wondering how much do you think it costs to attend the conference?

urbanslug05:04:40

Like to esitimate travel costs

tomfaulhaber05:04:43

Hmm, pretty expensive, but they have opportunity grants

urbanslug05:04:53

Yeah, that’s what I’m applying for

tomfaulhaber05:04:00

overall, St. Louis can be pretty cheap

urbanslug05:04:24

Problem is I am not sure what to fill under "If you selected "Travel (air, etc)" above please estimate your travel costs"

urbanslug05:04:44

I googled for air ticket fares and got something like $1600

urbanslug05:04:51

From Nairobi

tomfaulhaber05:04:53

oh, just go on expedia and price out a ticket

tomfaulhaber05:04:01

wow, that's a long trip

urbanslug05:04:06

expedia? Googling it

tomfaulhaber05:04:12

but if that's what it is, that's what it is

urbanslug05:04:27

@tomfaulhaber: What is a long trip?

tomfaulhaber05:04:40

from Nairobi to St. Louis

tomfaulhaber05:04:19

but ask friends in Kenya who've been to the States - they'll know a lot better than we will

urbanslug05:04:30

Well yeah I’m from far away

igotmine05:04:11

For what it is worth, (though maybe you already saw this) but they do say they strongly prefer U.S. applicants for the opportunity grants

igotmine05:04:16

Not a reason not to apply though

tomfaulhaber05:04:17

that's cool. I'm sure that the Strangeloop team would try to help if they can

urbanslug05:04:29

Well that’s a bummer

tomfaulhaber05:04:59

but obviously, the cheaper you can figure out how to make it, the more likely they'll be able to help

tomfaulhaber05:04:36

I think that the reason they prefer US is because they can help more people with the money they've raised

igotmine05:04:42

Yeah, I mean, maybe apply and try to do some crowdfunding as well. Perhaps they cannot cover your full costs but you can bridge the gap with a couple different methods

igotmine05:04:03

That also might demonstrate a compelling determination

tomfaulhaber05:04:07

but I agree with @igotmine: try and also be creative

urbanslug05:04:24

Crap I already sent it.

urbanslug05:04:22

I sent it before I saw your be creative part.

igotmine05:04:26

Yeah I mean, you get it you get it. Worst case you don't but perhaps it opens up a line of communication.

tomfaulhaber05:04:15

@urbanslug: my best guess is that being from Africa probably works in your favor vs. being from say Europe or India, which have good local conferences and also more representation in the US tech community, but that's just a guess

urbanslug05:04:20

@tomfaulhaber: LOL I already regret sending that application tbh. Should’ve researched some more before just applying.

yogidevbear08:04:50

I know you've already completed the application, but if you're chosen, might help you find the best priced flight

urbanslug14:04:57

@yogidevbear: Cool name and thanks

urbanslug15:04:03

If I submit a session talk (and get accepted) the org will pay for me

urbanslug15:04:08

So I guess that’s cool

Alex Miller (Clojure team)16:04:16

@urbanslug: hey, I'm the Strange Loop founder/organizer. most of the comments above seem generally correct. if you'd like to update your app, either re-complete the form or just send an email to <mailto:[email protected]|[email protected]> with the corrections. we do focus on US, simply to stretch our funds to cover the maximum number of people. however we are happy to be creative in trying to bridge gaps and we can't have that conversation if you don't apply.

dpsutton16:04:24

dang. didn't know you were involved with strange loop, much less founder/organizer. All of the videos i've seen from that are top notch. That's an amazing thing you've fostered

Alex Miller (Clojure team)16:04:48

thanks :) although I owe it all to the speakers/attendees who make it amazing.
