do you have a question? It's awesome!
Hmm, pretty expensive, but they have opportunity grants
overall, St. Louis can be pretty cheap
Problem is I am not sure what to fill under "If you selected "Travel (air, etc)" above please estimate your travel costs"
oh, just go on expedia and price out a ticket
wow, that's a long trip
but if that's what it is, that's what it is
@tomfaulhaber: What is a long trip?
from Nairobi to St. Louis
but ask friends in Kenya who've been to the States - they'll know a lot better than we will
For what it is worth, (though maybe you already saw this) but they do say they strongly prefer U.S. applicants for the opportunity grants
that's cool. I'm sure that the Strangeloop team would try to help if they can
but obviously, the cheaper you can figure out how to make it, the more likely they'll be able to help
I think that the reason they prefer US is because they can help more people with the money they've raised
Yeah, I mean, maybe apply and try to do some crowdfunding as well. Perhaps they cannot cover your full costs but you can bridge the gap with a couple different methods
but I agree with @igotmine: try and also be creative
Yeah I mean, you get it you get it. Worst case you don't but perhaps it opens up a line of communication.
@urbanslug: my best guess is that being from Africa probably works in your favor vs. being from say Europe or India, which have good local conferences and also more representation in the US tech community, but that's just a guess
@tomfaulhaber: LOL I already regret sending that application tbh. Should’ve researched some more before just applying.
@urbanslug: also check out http://skyscanner.net for flights
I know you've already completed the application, but if you're chosen, might help you find the best priced flight
@yogidevbear: Cool name and thanks
@urbanslug: hey, I'm the Strange Loop founder/organizer. most of the comments above seem generally correct. if you'd like to update your app, either re-complete the form or just send an email to <mailto:[email protected]|[email protected]> with the corrections. we do focus on US, simply to stretch our funds to cover the maximum number of people. however we are happy to be creative in trying to bridge gaps and we can't have that conversation if you don't apply.
dang. didn't know you were involved with strange loop, much less founder/organizer. All of the videos i've seen from that are top notch. That's an amazing thing you've fostered
thanks :) although I owe it all to the speakers/attendees who make it amazing.
