goat moaning guys

meow17:02:09

gluten morgen all

conormcd17:02:48

@meow: To avoid having a meta-argument about discussing #C03RZGPG1 in #C03RZGPG1. Is policing it that hard really worth it? Anyone who's bothered by the level of traffic there currently should just mute it (IMHO).

conormcd17:02:09

While it's not part-able, you can still render it irrelevant

meow17:02:11

I'm not an admin so it isn't up to me. People complain. About a lot of things. I would tell them to buck up and grow a pair. Good thing I'm not an admin.

conormcd17:02:43

Ah, so we're on the same page. simple_smile

meow17:02:26

I don't know. Are you a sadomasochist who likes reactji performance art?

conormcd17:02:30

Well, maybe not the same page then, but a similar book. 😄

meow17:02:40

It's all good. 😉

echristopherson18:02:45

ok, meekan scares me

meow19:02:22

What is meekan

agile_geek19:02:41

meekan is a scheduling bot

borkdude20:02:10

just curious what you guys think. if money didn't matter, 13" or 15" MBP?

conormcd20:02:54

15" if you don't move around a lot. 13" if you do. If you have any plans of working on a plane, the 15" is too big.

akiva20:02:55

It’s the only one that I know of that hot-swaps the two video chips. It’s quite fast overeall.

akiva20:02:26

That’s a consideration, definitely, but I’ve never had a problem with a 15” on a plane.

akiva20:02:44

Because I always fly first class.

akiva20:02:48

Just kidding. I wish, though.

borkdude20:02:18

if I'm traveling, I tend to take my Macbook Air

conormcd20:02:42

I only say because my 13" appears to be the width of most economy tray tables. And if the person in front of me doesn't recline too far I'm all good on height.

meow20:02:23

@akiva: You're real problem is trying to eat gumbo while working on your oversized laptop on the airplane. 😉

akiva20:02:56

It’s one of my very, very many problems.

akiva20:02:33

I have a 13” now because my 15” died a horrible death. But when I traveled with my 15”, it was okay as long as I had a window seat on a decent airline.

akiva20:02:58

A friend of mine used to travel with one of the old 17” ones and would get regularly beat up by angry passengers.

meow20:02:34

Gumbo spills will ruin just about any laptop. And it's a horrble way for them to die.

akiva20:02:44

That’s very true.

echristopherson20:02:45

I think it'd be a good way to die

akiva20:02:55

It’s how I plan to go.

akiva20:02:04

But I’m also most likely not a laptop.

borkdude21:02:54

I once ruined a Macbook Air, well actually my wife did, by spilling water on it. I'm very cautious since then, even in trains, when people are passing by or when I'm drinking tea behind my desk simple_smile

akiva21:02:18

Mine was killed by ramen noodle soup.

akiva21:02:46

And, yes, I am hyper-cautious now.

borkdude21:02:46

I was on an international train once. Liquid was leaking from someones luggage above the seats.

borkdude21:02:58

And someone was working on a laptop close by... it was very close.

borkdude21:02:33

They should invent waterproof laptop keyboards

akiva21:02:42

Something similar happened to me. I had one of those cheap/usually-handed-out-for-free water bottles in my bag and I didn’t screw the cap on properly, it fell over on its side and was slowly filling up my backpack, with my laptop in it, with water

borkdude21:02:45

but it will drop replacement sales 😉

akiva21:02:48

Hah true. I’m still angry that my old-style Mac Pro has no modern monitors compatible with it and my old 24” Cinema display is dying slowly.

borkdude21:02:51

Talking about another first world problem, I bought a 25" Dell screen, but I find the resolution too high... the letters are too small...

borkdude21:02:26

@akiva: can't you buy some converter thingie?

akiva21:02:21

Maybe now. I checked a couple of years ago and there was no DisplayPort-to-Thunderbolt converters and sites were reporting that Apple wasn’t going to allow it to happen, third-party or otherwise.

akiva21:02:25

There maybe updated ATI cards which might have Thunderbolt but, again, haven’t researched. My Mac Pro’s in storage.

borkdude21:02:45

How do you feel about the Apple Magic Mouse?

akiva21:02:07

I have one but I prefer the Magic Trackpad. And I have a really nice Kensington Trackball for gaming.

borkdude21:02:51

@akiva: so you need Thunderbolt per se for your Macbook Pro?

akiva21:02:32

Nah, my MacBook Pro is new enough (purchased just a few months ago) that it has all Thunderbolt ports.

akiva21:02:37

I was talking about the old, tall, silver 2009 Mac Pro beasts earlier.

borkdude21:02:21

well that one is hard to use on a plane for sure simple_smile

akiva21:02:32

Hahaha yes.

borkdude21:02:05

I've used my Macbook Air on planes also, but it depends on the plane if it works

borkdude21:02:20

sometimes the screen tilts too far in

akiva21:02:30

Yeah. It simply doesn’t always work.

borkdude21:02:56

Maybe the 11" MBA would

borkdude21:02:04

but that's too small for me

akiva21:02:17

Yeah. It’s way too tiny. I’d rather just see about propping up an iPad with a keyboard.

akiva21:02:42

And I mean way too tiny to own an 11” laptop just for using on an airplane.

borkdude21:02:47

The new Macbook is really light and 12", it might be the optimum for travels

akiva21:02:14

The one with the new funky keyboard? Some friends of mine complained about typing on it but I had no trouble.

borkdude21:02:42

The keyboard is still the same size as always I think?

akiva21:02:01

But it uses a different kind of technology so it’s really super-flat.

akiva21:02:12

And it definitely does feel differently. But I liked it.

borkdude21:02:30

I've used a Magic Keyboard lately, it's more flat than the previous wireless keyboard

borkdude21:02:49

My favorite keyboard was on my Lenovo 12" laptop some years ago I think

borkdude21:02:16

but the Magic Keyboard is good also

akiva21:02:52

Right on. I cook along at a good pace on the standard MacBook Air/Pro keyboards but you put me behind my CODE Keyboard (also in storage, sadly), I hit about 10-20 wpm higher.

gjnoonan21:02:06

You can't beat a Mechanical Keyboard, on Cherry MX Blue's simple_smile

akiva21:02:41

Cherry MX Clears for me.

borkdude21:02:33

I'm glad not everyone uses those. The sound in the office drives me mad.

gjnoonan21:02:48

I'm a fan of the clicky clacky

akiva21:02:51

Oh, I’d never use one in the office without dampeners.

lucien.knechtli21:02:54

just ordered an ergodox infinity with zealio 65g. currently typing on an ergodox-ez with brown gaterons

jswart21:02:04

and this is why my mechanical keyboard flares up a bit of RSI https://clojurians.slack.com/archives/off-topic/p1455571552000088

borkdude21:02:06

(yay for headphones)

lucien.knechtli21:02:21

figured that my coworkers would not appreciate blues

akiva21:02:31

It’s my fault!

gjnoonan21:02:32

I use mine in the office...

lucien.knechtli21:02:54

open office layout?

echristopherson21:02:12

star office layout

akiva21:02:25

Yeah, I want to get… the browns? With like the one layer dampeners. They should still pop but shouldn’t be so loud.

lucien.knechtli21:02:50

honestly, browns aren't that bad even without damping

gjnoonan21:02:14

yup, Most of the people around me sit with their headphones on though .. that was before I got this too though lol

lucien.knechtli21:02:20

unless you bottom out every time - but that's not the switch itself

akiva21:02:23

I have an old 104-key terminal-style keyboard from waaaay back in the day and it sounds like a machine gun.

borkdude21:02:52

What do you guys think of the Boss QC 25 headphones? I like the idea of noise cancelling, but the sound is too flat for my taste.

gjnoonan21:02:08

I'm Typing on a Filco Majestouch at the moment, blank keys .. Have to admit though I am a big fan of the sound

akiva21:02:18

I’m a Sennheiser fan but I tend to really hate wearing headphones for very long.

gjnoonan21:02:20

I may get some o-rings for it, but I dunno

borkdude21:02:33

I like the sound of keyboard when I'm typing, not when I'm hearing someone else typing furiously

lucien.knechtli21:02:04

while I was working at lockheed, some of the hardened server hardware had buckling spring keyboards that I'm pretty sure are custom made for the racks - I could hear them over the server farm fans they were so clicky

akiva21:02:07

@borkdude, I get that. And it’s why I’ve never brought my CODE into work. It’s loud-as-hell.

lucien.knechtli21:02:39

every one of my coworkers hated them except me lol

akiva21:02:35

Hahaha. @lucien.knechtli, I’m capricious about it. Some people type… nicer? than others? Some people even on a laptop I want to smack in the back of the head.

lucien.knechtli21:02:41

also pretty sure that I could have taken a fireaxe to those keyboards and have barely made a dent

gjnoonan21:02:56

By the time you factor in other people typing, and the hustle and bustle of chatter it really isn't too bad

lucien.knechtli21:02:55

unless you sit by sales. then you pretty much need headphones. can't wait for the office move next month - we'll have enough space to actually have some sound separation between teams

borkdude21:02:57

Look up 'misophonia' if you have some people looking very angry when you type loud simple_smile

gjnoonan21:02:33

@borkdude: I have Misophonia myself, with other sounds 😉

akiva21:02:43

I have a friend who literally loses his shit if he hears anyone eating with their mouths open.

borkdude21:02:10

I have it too, strangely enough only with some people

borkdude21:02:17

it also matters how they type

akiva21:02:19

I’m lucky then. Few noises bother me. Except really crappy music.

borkdude21:02:36

I gotta run. Thanks for the chat simple_smile

akiva21:02:41

Anytime, sir!

akiva21:02:50

I should go do some dishes or set fire to the kitchen or something.

akiva21:02:18

Earspray sounds like something excessively unpleasant and unexpected.

echristopherson21:02:22

earspray is when people have their earphones so loud you can hear it

akiva21:02:38

I’m really really bad about that.

lucien.knechtli21:02:46

i was thinking sneak attack with canned air

akiva21:02:00

As a kid, I had astronomically bad ear infections and so I have a lot of damage. Good thing for me: I have remarkably good hearing in spite of the scarring; Bad thing for everyone else: I can listen to music extremely loud without concern.

akiva21:02:55

But I try to be respectful in an office environment

echristopherson22:02:04

I wouldn't have thought those two attributes would coöccur
