good morning 👋

podviaznikov17:06:58

@alandipert: that is a great idea. I’m missing such service for sure

borkdude18:06:51

I'm wondering if there was a time where it was hard to get Ruby developers because it was a little bit a niche like Clojure is now

borkdude18:06:10

and how long ago that was

chipf0rk18:06:02

before Rails happened? ;)

borkdude18:06:51

so basically 2004/2005 ?

noisesmith18:06:52

back when you didn't have three month evening programs promising to teach you to program and get you a job using ruby

chipf0rk18:06:26

afaik it was very popular in Japan before Rails happened, but mostly just in Japan

chipf0rk18:06:46

so yes, that's probably the time when it stopped being niche

samflores18:06:18

my first contact with Ruby was around 2005 toying with RPG maker. ~5y later I knew Rails and didn’t recognise the language until much later 😄

chipf0rk18:06:10

RPG Maker? which version? I used 2000 but I can't remember using any Ruby

chipf0rk18:06:22

that stuff was awesome. haha

samflores18:06:00

I made nothing useful with it, but played a bit

chipf0rk18:06:35

well I don't think I made anything "useful" with it, strictly speaking :)

chipf0rk18:06:22

but I spent a load of time trying to build some games, was a great experience!

samflores18:06:25

well, games are very useful

chipf0rk18:06:36

not what I built ;)
