I finally took the time to publish the (stalled) official spec for the nREPL protocol http://spec.nrepl.org/ Still needs a lot of work, but at least the foundation is there.

In intro it says that's a draft for a future 1.0 version. Once we get there I guess servers should also start advertising which version of the protocol are they targeting.
