morning all

korny08:10:43

morning y'all

gjnoonan08:10:54

Winter is truly coming, 4 degrees currently up here

gjnoonan08:10:07

My favourite time of year though

xlevus08:10:29

Wife said it's going to be a cold and snowy one this year.

xlevus08:10:40

She was unimpressed with my excitement

xlevus08:10:02

(She's from Northern Australia, they don't do cold)

gjnoonan08:10:03

Aye apparently it will be the worst one for a few years .. but they say that every year 😕

thomas08:10:25

I never understand that... they can't really forecast the weather for next week, but somehow they know what is going to happen in a few months time.

agile_geek09:10:42

@thomas: any forecast much past 5 days (10 tops) is so low in confidence statistically as to be almost useless.

thomas09:10:00

I once heard that if you say the weather today is the same as yesterday you are correct 60% of the time.... quite a good hit rate IMHO

thomas09:10:09

(better then playing the lottery)

gjnoonan10:10:31

@thomas: does that work the other way round, saying the weather tomorrow will be the same as today? I wonder what the deviation is

thomas10:10:52

@gjnoonan: that should work as well is my understanding. and an accurate forecast can be off by 2 degrees as well.

thomas10:10:58

so the margin is quite big.

Pablo Fernandez10:10:40

I’d guess that changes drastically depending on the location.

agile_geek10:10:21

@thomas: @gjnoonan bias will tend to give you that effect. You should read ‘Clojure For Data Science’ by my mate @henrygarner for a much more scientific explanation of bias!

thomas10:10:07

there are too many Clojure books out there now.... I can't keep up with it....

Pablo Fernandez10:10:07

It’s almost like the language is going mainstream!

Pablo Fernandez10:10:31

My magic trackpad is disconnecting itself every other minute.

Pablo Fernandez10:10:38

This is driving me crazy.

thomas10:10:54

hmm Clojure going mainstream? time to find something else....

gjnoonan10:10:03

@agile_geek: It’s on my to-read pile, maybe I’ll give it a look sooner than later

thomas10:10:14

surely real Hipster use Cobol... so retro!!!!

thomas10:10:02

and use punch cards of course

korny11:10:11

I’m from Southern Australia - don’t find the cold here to be particularly bad, to be honest. The lack of sunlight is more of a hassle!

korny11:10:24

ObClojure - anyone got suggestions for showing simple 3d visualizations in clojure? Quil was my first thought, but are there others?

Pablo Fernandez11:10:35

korny: are you aware of SAD, sunlamps and if you are into experimental stuff, EnChroma?

xlevus11:10:18

might get a SAD lamp this winter

Pablo Fernandez11:10:13

I am very lucky in that weather has almost no effect on my mood. Then again, maybe I’m just moody all the time.

xlevus11:10:25

I think the entire of london gets somewhat grumpier in winter

gjnoonan11:10:51

I’m a yorkshireman, I’ll keep my thoughts of londoners to myself 😄

xlevus11:10:20

It's ok, we wouldn't ask you to part with anything. We know how hard it is for you guys :P

xlevus11:10:40

@pupeno: You know Daniel Magliola?

Pablo Fernandez11:10:03

xlevus: how do you know him?

xlevus11:10:47

I was shocked to see you pop up on Facebook

Pablo Fernandez11:10:21

london social club?

korny11:10:01

pupeno: I’ve seen SAD lights, I had a cheap one when working in Glasgow. But really, it’s not a big thing, just an annoyance; it’s been very very grey the last few weeks. Melbourne in winter is pretty cold, but there’s usually a fair bit of sun still (and the nights aren’t nearly as long!)

xlevus11:10:46

"I need a lamp to make me slightly happy. Oh god this is the worst, I hate my life"

korny13:10:56

Life. Don’t talk to me about life.
