I've been thinking - do we actually have "part-time" jobs in software development? I'm looking to complement my salary (been having way too many expenses with lots of unexpected things) but I don't want to actually leave my current, stable job for something unpredictable that might pay more... but I saw that everybody asks for full-time only. Is this simply not a thing in our area?
When I've supplemented my day job, I've done it in the guise of "consulting" where I control the hours. It takes more work to find consulting gigs rather than regular jobs, since you're selling a specific service, but you can generally charge a higher per-hour rate for that sort of thing. I mostly used to do architectural reviews and write guidance documents for companies.
I bill per hour by default, but I have two long-term clients and occasionally some temporary ones that come from this server - no idea how one should actually be searching for something like that.
it depends, doing a part time job could make negative influence on your full time job, except for open source projects
My experience is that it's quite hard to find part-time jobs as a software developer. It was always difficult but now it's even more. I don't exactly know why but could imagine that employers want you to be part of the scrum (or whatever) workflow and that means taking part in a lot of meetings by default. For part-timers this would mean there is a lot less working hours for actual work.
Here in the NL most dev jobs are 32 to 40 hours a week. And at my current employer 36 is even the standard.
"part-time" - I would say no. you can do consultancy etc., but then you will lose more time to find clients and you need experience. This is long term path. Especially now, job market demand proven experience. In my opinion there is no room on the market to make it reasonable choice as a addition for income. Only full in. Make your choice 🙂
> taking part in a lot of meetings by default Meeting-Driven Development 🤣
You can do freelancing
