When you spend half an hour tailoring your resume for a jobs board listing, only to discover... the job is no longer available π
On the hiring side I see zero value in tailored resumes. In fact, if the tailoring is obvious, Iβm more likely to reject it. Same for these stupid cover letters - unless thereβs something important to point out thatβs not obvious from the resume, just skip it. Better ROI to spend your time on a project that can go on your portfolio.
Hard disagree. As a hiring manager of nearly thirty years, not having a tailored cover letter is likely to get your application put aside...
Having multiple versions of your resume, tailored to specific types of job is a good practice. You can always tailor the cover letter to the specific company, rather than your resume.
+1 ... I keep a giant master copy of the resume with everything and the kitchen sink, and delete / reorder bullet points to narrow down to specific job descriptions.
Same for the cover letter TBH. I know what I want, so I have material / template for a cover letter and edit down to the JD. So I only spend time writing the "why" for the job application.
Interesting, I never even considered that
Maybe I would have had more success if I had multiple versions of the CV, just seems like a weird thing to do
But I'll try next time I'm looking for a job
It depends on whether all the jobs you're applying to are all similar, or whether you're applying to different types of jobs, e.g., devops type jobs and engineering management type jobs, where you'd want to tailor the CV/resume to the type of job, play up some skills, play down others. For each specific job application, you can write (or edit down) a specific cover letter that says why you're applying to that particular company/role and why they should hire you.
This is why i check whether link works and go through the JD before even applying πΆβπ«οΈ
