kind of not common question, but… do we have black list of clojure companies who hire, lie about reasons of delayed payment and not pay after all? I am asking because I have the situation. I don’t want it to repeat. It will be great to check company before start to work. Adding such company to black list could be motivating for them πŸ™‚ Not even mentioning they can repeat the process with other people. Just thinking what I can do to protect other people and maybe, just maybe such information can be motivating for them to pay after all. I live in Poland so who cares while company do business in US and Japan.

the company will simply change their name and the people behind it will continue with their shenanigans. and most people will not look up a company's reputation on such a web site before taking on a project. also, how can one be sure the dev complaining is being fully honest? I cannot see how such a site can work

It should not matter if it's Clojure or not. The company likely hires non-Clojure developers and – non-developers as well. Applicants in those positions shall read about their practices as well. No matter if employee or contracted person you unfortunately have to do your due diligence on platforms that are popular in the country of that respective company. I am sorry it happened to you. I am not aware of a global platform that is used by all and everybody equally much. Typically it varies based on country and industry, but not programming language.

As a hint for future endeavours: As an applicant I also like to interview a bunch of people who are currently working there or have left the company more or less recently (few years still count as recent enough the bigger the company is).

Not gonna lie, it seems a poor idea both in terms of effectiveness (there will always an nth programmer that will take the work others didn't) and legality (being accused of defamation can be expensive). If you are 100% you are in the right, with all the work performed according to every detail in the contract, etc, you should lawyer up (and maybe share over here the verdict as long as it's legal to do so). ...of course, a good chunk of times it's not worth it (ask a few contractors with 20+y experience if they've ever been unpaid)

> you should lawyer up Considering I live in Poland it will not work, because of high complexity and cost.

> (being accused of defamation can be expensive Perhaps but the same. I live in Poland which work for both ways.

Most international contracts say the country where any litigations would be held, it doesn't have to be Poland. Last time I used a lawyer for "scary letter/call" services it was a mere EUR150. I get that it can ramp up quickly for serious litigation. Personally I would be willing to give it a shot some way or another. As a contractor/company you may have access to special credit lines at your bank. Or you can hustle your way e.g. hire a fresh graduate who you can negotiate the compensation with, based on performance.

I think it's really weird, but I had 2 maybe 3 occasions when something was not right, illegal that counterparty did, but due to relatively small money ammount to gain, lawyers were saying it is really not worth it. Because you will spend a lot of time, you will spend your money for a chance to get money that will barely cover costs, and if you count time spent on that it's definitely money negative thing. So small crime really thrives due to that, because nobody is going to engage with court and police try to avoid such cases. It's really weird that the system is built like that.

Agree. I have experience about money execution in my own country. It usually is not worth it. Execution from far away country is for sure not worth it.

I know many people think law will protect them, but reality is way different.

Depends on the definition of "small", I did have a problem many years for a very small invoice for my then-junior dev rate. Today I would not tolerate it for my monthly rate, even if I won EUR0 with all the hassle I would gain a verdict that I can show to others in a future, so that people know not to mess with me.

If you think about it, many "mom and pop" shops invest some amount in the high five figures just to open a restaurant, bakery, etc. So to me it doesn't feel right that most people in the consultant space believe that their cost of doing business is essentially zero. It works until it doesn't.

You could create non-paying-employers here and name the company there. The threat of public shaming should help keep them in line.
