Just saw a post in #jobs, and even if I know that salaries vary, it does make me wonder (and I must admit that I dont know the range): is 15 to 20 GBP per hour really the norm for clojure dev work? (see https://clojurians.slack.com/archives/C05006WDW/p1725981346593609)

I think there are some misconceptions here. Salaries being varied is indeed normal. But they vary due to multiple factors and "the norm", however you define it, is unlikely to be of much use. It also doesn't matter whether it's Clojure or not. There's no "this person uses Clojure so we must give them a high salary" going on. You might see some graphs or at least dots (e.g. the SO survey) and think that there's a causation. But it's just a correlation. Clojure people tend to get paid more (at least on the charts that I've seen) because the distribution skews towards more senior devs. And it's seniority that pays, not the language. As for the 15-20 GBP/h - it might be totally fine for juniors in some specific areas.

Thank you for your reasoned, informational, and nicely-communicated response. I appreciate that. gratitude-thank-you I did consider that it might be for a junior role... except when you read the description it doesnt seem that way: "Take ownership of the product feature and be responsible for its quality." "Review other people's code and ensure that it is up to company standards." "Have experience with Java, Clojure, ClojureScript and be comfortable learning other new languages"

I haven't read that posting, no - was answering within the context of the question itself. With that description, I personally would be surprised if they'd find any good fit.

I contacted this company yesterday (not CV, just question about expected skills)- they didn't answer yet. If I receive some info, I can post it here :D

> is 15 to 20 GBP per hour really the norm for clojure dev work No. I'd rate it as an entry level salary for developers regardless of tech, at least for London but also for other areas of the UK a senior can aim for way more. If it's truly remote from everywhere, it might be a way better deal depending on the local cost of living, and there I'll leave each candidate doing their math 🙂

For every developer role, you will find a huge range of salaries. I have heard about $3/hour Indian developers writing PHP and then there is https://x.com/levelsio who earns millions of dollars writing not very elegant PHP.

I have heard about $3/hour Indian developers writing PHPYou can even find people who'll work for free. Maybe even pay you if your charisma and tolerance of lies are high enough. :) But I'd wager that all of that is atypical, let alone for a senior role that the position in question describes. > and then there is https://x.com/levelsio But that's not an employment, so not relevant. That person earns not by just writing code and doing other code-related activity. They've created and are managing digital products.

Also, looking at https://www.levels.fyi/t/software-engineer/locations/london-metro-area the SE salaries for London in general (not Clojure-specific) look rather good. Compared to e.g. Munich https://www.levels.fyi/t/software-engineer/locations/munich-metro-region. The latter also being an expensive city, albeit not as expensive as London. Only Netherlands (EU) and Switzerland (non-EU) can beat that in Europe as far as I know. Somehow though, I never really got good offers from English companies. Both yearly salary wise but also these hourly wages. If that's being based on a contractor / self-employed contract, you'd get 5x of that at German companies for an average SE profile, just for comparison. I would assume that in this case of 15-20 GBP they're looking for a person with rather limited experience. Which is not necessarily a bad thing, just needs less broad or deep experience. Hence also the global search and outsourcing approach to places where 15-20 GBP means more than to a local SE.
