I just applied for a job, and in the apply process they asked me salary range and if I would agree to be paid partially in equity and products from a child company... Then, about 3 hours after I applied they already asked me to enter their slack to ping people and see if I can get their attention to be selected for the role. That second part could be just a difference in the hiring process from what I am used to, but because of the first part... I confess I am unsure how to interpret it (in a good or bad light, I mean)

the second part sounds like a company that's trying to be remote only but have no idea how to

It seems like a weird enough ask ("join this slack and ping folks to get the interview going) that I'd both be tempted to pursue just to experience it and tempted to drop out due to the weirdness. Asking for a salary range isn't odd. Some compensation in equity also isn't odd (but I'd generally value that at 0. It is a dice roll that rarely works out). Getting paid in products sounds unusual, though maybe appealing depending on what those products are (though, I'd rather just get paid more money)

> agree to be paid partially in ... products from a child company this is the sketchy part to me. pay me normally and i'll buy the product myself

my 2 cents: most startups fail, so if the equity is from some stock in a startup there is a good chance it will be worthless. Depending on where you live, those worthless stocks can also incur an income tax expense.

I agree, that first part is completely sketchy and I said that I don't agree to be paid in... well, non-conventional means 😄

I am just curious about the second part (like, jump into their slack and start to ping people)

Not familiar with such a practice myself, but perhaps they're in such a growth phase where they need to show growth by any means and they don't care whether it's efficient/effective at all.

it's a red flag, at least considering what I would normally expect from a healthy company. I took part of a similar hiring process some time ago in which I was tasked to work for 1/2 weeks in a product feature and I can make it quickly, but at some point I had to discuss some architectural details that would require changes in other parts of the system to get my changes merged, however they couldn't give me the proper attention. Company seems to be good, with good culture and with interesting product, but the team are so well integrated and fast that they wasn't able to stop a little to let me get into the process. Sad

As proverb said: "You get paid in cabbage : keep rabbits" But if you get paid in sex - there is much fewer ways to reuse it ... 🤷

Just to be clear - I know the "alternative salary" is a bad thing, especially when they are already asking if I accept to be paid in products/equity before even the first interview. What I am curious is about the second part (joining slack and pinging people)
