curious has the #C050UG324GM channel worked for many people especially if your from the uk ?

Martynas Maciulevičius13:10:26

I'm not from the UK but I'm from EU. Two people reached out to me and both were offering unpaid work (i.e. can't pay now -- you can take equity of a company that doesn't properly exist or take mostly equity with very little pay). I posted three or four times throughout the lifetime of the channel. It would be good to know if others had better experiences.

It's kind of the inverse of the usual hunting applying and sending over a CV, which is why I was curious if it works, also wondered if its appropriate for not available just yet as I would have a notice but looking for a change.

> for not available just yet as I would have a notice but looking for a change If your employer is in the channel then you might expose yourself to early termination

always wroth baring in mind

I think that the two messages throughout two-or-so months are not worth the risk of potentially losing a job  Maybe UK market is different and maybe you can post from a new account to mitigate the risk. But I think that there is not enough volume to warrant this risk in that channel.

I got my current job from that channel, though I'm in the US.

I posted a message in #available-for-jobs on the 9th October and was contacted by one person later that day. I have not had any contact since then and dont really expect to hear any more. I posted mainly as an exercise to summarise my experiences to something very succinct (a challenge after several decades 🙂 ) Edit - though I was using neovim for a moment :rolling_on_the_floor_laughing: I am far more likely to be contacted via LinkedIn and have had a dozen or so contacts this month. Approximately 3% of all Clojurians Slack members are part of the #available-for-jobs channel, so it is possible employers are looking in that channel to hire, although it could easily be only those looking for a new job :woman-shrugging: Your current employer cannot legally terminate you for looking for a job, it might actually make them consider how well they have been treating you and put some effort in keeping you. I would at least discussing a desire to change roles with your manager/team lead/mentor first, before posting in #available-for-jobs otherwise it could make for awkward situations. The most effective way is to contact a company you want to work for and give them some idea why you would be useful to them. Most employers spend way more time 'discussing' that they don't have enough resource than actually going out and looking for them (its not usually their skill set anyway).

> Your current employer cannot legally terminate you for looking for a job, it might actually make them consider how well they have been treating you and put some effort in keeping you So how would one prove that the employer decided to get rid of the person because of the post? If they say it's downsizing and so on then you can't really prove anything

I have always avoided linkedin never seen useful content on there, but seen a few people suggest it recently so perhaps I should start using it, yeah all good points I have not been actively looking other than keeping an eye on #C05006WDW reddit and clojurejobs board for anything that looks interesting, those have been a bit thin on the ground recently. are there any good tools for find companies using clojure in uk I am aware of a few but sure not everyone actively advertises it.

@UU67HFS2X I use LinkedIn as my complete and very detailed career history. I've had a few employers who wanted to know the full history (no idea why). Having the full history allows me to quickly select the most useful information from my career and create a specific CV relevant to the role on offer. I include a link to my LinkedIn profile so those curious can go and look at everything if they want. Its also useful as a reminder of what I've actually done over the years, its very easy to forget laughcry I do get contacted by recruiters searching on LinkedIn and have obtained a few roles that way, including my highest paying role to date. When it comes to finding a good job with a supportive company, then its worth investing time into making yourself easy to discover as it broadens the possibilities from only your own job searches.

I have always relied on my CV to remind me where I have worked, but good point on being discoverable, I have thought a few times I should post more personal stuff on github / gitlab for this reason as I currently use gitea which makes it look like i am doing less than I actually am
