does anyone remember what was that job site which was visualizing your desired job and current skills with "radar plots" or "spider graphs"?
Can anyone explain if you have to pay any taxes when you're an independent contractor in Europe working for a company in the US?
I would suspect you have to pay taxes where you are incorporated at the very least.
You’ll need to talk to someone familiar with the tax laws between the two specific countries. The U.S. has tax treaties with some countries, which makes life a little easier.
@borkdude: I dunno about your specific situation but generally you are obligated to pay taxes where you live
I am an U.S. citizen, and if you make above ~$90 you have to pay tax on that
@ddellacosta: income tax, yes, but VAT?
but if you are not a U.S. citizen, I don’t see how you can be expected to pay tax in the U.S.
VAT I can’t speak to; isn’t that a European thing?
sorry, I missed the point re: VAT
again, can’t see how that’s relevant for a non-USian
FWIW I used to live in Japan as an American, getting paid by a Canadian company
@borkdude: you will almost certainly be subject to VAT specific to your country of incorporation as it's where you are 'selling your services' from
was a pain in the ass but not super challenging in the end
yeah, what agile_geek says makes the most sense to me
think you can basically cross U.S. off the list in terms of taxes (PLEASE CONFIRM THIS WITH A PROFESSIONAL)
I agree with @ddellacosta - ask your accountant.
But I would make sure you invoice client with VAT included
otherwise u may be liable from your own 'pocket'
If you were selling a physical product you would charge local tax and the buyer could apply for rebate locally if rules of their country allow
I would imagine services are same
@borkdude: I might stand corrected, but I think you have to be VAT registered in order to charge VAT on services you offer and you only have to be VAT registered if you earn earn over a certain amount. Otherwise you simply charge what you charge without specifying VAT. That said, I'd check with an accountant local to the country where you live.
@borkdude: Export services from EU are not VAT-liable. You'll need to put 0% VAT into invoice, but you then you can't recover VAT paid on your expenses too.
@dottedmag: I think you're right at least for my country
