Hi all. I’m Stefan from Regensburg/Germany. Currently I am a researcher at the Universtity of Regensburg in educational data science and a former web developer (well actually doing a lot of web and server based stuff internally for our research group). So the languages I mostly speak are Python and Javascript (sometimes R). I came to Clojure by dealing with functional programming in general and reading the book “Grokking Simplycity” by Eric Normand which was mindblowing for me. I followed his podcast which naturally lead to Clojure. As I am an Emacs user for about 7 years now and dipped my toes into elisp and common lisp some time ago I knew I have to try Clojure. What should I say? I’m learning right now with the books “The Clojure Workshop” and “Clojure for the Brave and True”, and I feel right at home at it. I really want to learn more and explore Clojure in my day to day working and projects. I’d also like to meet some Clojurists from Germany some time - that would be great. 😃 So hello again to all of you! 👋

Hi Stefan, welcome on board 🙂 I’m from Germany, too. I use Clojure from time to time in my daily work. I would like to use it more for work, but 99 % people want Java(script), or python. I think, that is what they learned and what they are used to. So I’m glad, that you - with an educational background - started using Clojure and can reach out to many young people and encourage them in using Clojure, too 🙂

Hello Hendrik. Nice to meet you. Yes of course, that is my impression, too. The introductory courses for Python and Javascript are chock-full. But as I have the freedom of teaching, I maybe doing a course on functional programing in the winter term next year (must feel more comfortable with it). And yeah I think Clojure would be the best candidate. More so if I could show my students how to do stuff they are used to in Clojure. 🙂

When I was in graduate school I was a teaching assistant for a computer science 101 course that used https://htdp.org/ as its textbook. HtDP uses Scheme, not Clojure, but I found it to be really thoughtfully constructed. You might be able to borrow some ideas from it for your course. simple_smile

Oh that‘s a really nice book, I peeked into some years ago. That would definitely be a good base. There‘s also a good book, which uses Racket in the same vein, where I forgot the title about. But such a course would be something I have in my mind. â˜șïžđŸ‘Œ
