I've worked on a hard problem the last two weeks. It felt like a mess untill I had clear criteria to evaluate solutions, and had evaluated three approaches according to those criteria, decision matrix style. When I had finally filled out all the cells, it became clear that I could fulfill all the criteria with a fourth approach. I wouldn't have gotten there without the lessons from Design in Practice and Design in Practice in Practice: they helped me see what I was doing wrong, and that I needed to slow down.
