From what I've understand ICFP is pretty academic centered. An ex-colleague that knows way more about languages says he doesn't understand the talks.

Yeah, it is quite academic. I quite enjoyed the FARM workshop when it was in Gothenburg but there were large parts of the main tracks that was outside my expertise 😉
