emacs-prelude: how does one customize the width at which the text starts to be colored red?
You can do that by setting the whitespace-line-column variable in an Emacs lisp file in ~/.emacs.d/personal. For example, I've go this in a file called editor-prefs.el in that folder:
(require 'whitespace)
(setq whitespace-line-column 120)
(setq-default fill-column 120)
I like to set the fill column too so that I can use auto-fill while I'm entering long comments.thank you @sarahr! I'm finding that setting the variables work just fine without the require. Is the require needed?
Ah, that's a good question. It probably isn't needed in this case.
