That pricing structure is really helpful, it removes the latter half of the "RDS just works and is cheaper" argument I often hear
Amazon's Relational Database Service, in which you can run Postgres and MySQL and stuff
It is significantly easier to set up than Datomic, because it's just the underlying store
I've regularly heard people saying "I'd love to use Datomic, but I don't have time for all that ops work"
They tend to also say "And it costs too much", but at a dollar a day that argument no longer holds
Apparently I’m in a really narrow band of users, according to what was said at the conj about where Cognitect sees Datomic Cloud going, but I am already doing (some of) “all that ops work” and my general response to “we don’t know what the prod topology pricing will be” is give it to meeeeee
Migrating from a by-hand production Datomic footprint to the new Marketplace offering is the closest I think we will ever get to “Datomic RDS” (assuming Amazon doesn’t buy Cognitect) and I want it as soon as I can get it. I’m 100% sure that the price will be a wash relative to keeping my own infrastructure up, monitored, and maintained
+1 to that, @chris_johnson - we already have all our infra figured out and stable, but i’m pretty sure that Datomic Cloud is going to give us better performance for less money. the only issue we have is we’ve written a ton of code using Datomic Peer 🙈
Unfortunately the peer is not part of Cloud. I asked Stu specifically about this. They may add it at some point later.
I d really love to use datomic cloud, really, so I hope pricing will be flexible enough
I'm not sure if I missed this in the talk, but does the Datomic dev stack include a license, or is that extra?
@danielcompton Datomic Cloud is usage-based pricing. The approx $1 a day pricing is for both the infrastructure cost and the Datomic cost. No additional/separate license required.
Great, same for Prod?
Oh, I must have missed that from the talk, very cool!
I was interested in Datomic Cloud before, but now I'm even more interested. 👍
