Hoping this to be an interesting book for this community (it's Scheme after all, the Clojure translation will be a breeze), a new title is available in the Little Series, http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/?ean=9780262546379 by Dan Friedman and Anurag Mendhekar (Foreword by Guy Steele and Peter Norvig). The link is the currently the only available for purchase (US only and 25% discount). The Little books have kind of a unique approach and this one is no exception: the math about deep learning has been dissected and made available in simple terms and from first principles. Idc. I'll get the book and try to get through a chapter this week. I'm on vacation atm. How is it so far? Are the ideas explained clearly or are you having to fish through other resources?

The ideas are explained clearly and the socratic style makes sure you pick up everything along the the way. Nevertheless I found that some times I had to keep reading a bit and then backtrack to the start of the chapter to really grok something. By the end of chapter 4 you’ll have implemented gradient descent with no magic aside from ∇ which is used to find the slopes of functions at given function with respect to each formal parameter. ∇ is implemented in the appendix. Previously in the book we approximated slopes ourselves so we could do that, but the book uses ∇.
