There’s this site for looking up venues: https://www.tagvenue.com/uk/search/conference?longitude_from=-0.248565673828125&longitude_to=0.04669189453125&latitude_from=51.37888824732677&latitude_to=51.634392116224596&center_latitude=51.506819276260586&center_longitude=-0.1009368896484375&form_timestamp=1573286841&getAllRoomsPositions=true&hideRoomsData=false&items_per_page=36&map_zoom=11&people=100&room_features_1_time_limit=35&date=02%2F12%2F2019&time_from=&time_to=&room_layout=0&min_price=0&max_price=2000&neighbourhood=London&page=1&room_space=&room_space_unit=sqm&room_tag=conference&supervenues_only=false&iso_country_code=GB if nothing else, it at least gives us indication about possible options.
I’ve created a page for 100 tickets on Eventbrite, don’t publish it anywhere just yet, this is just to see who would commit and come to the conf: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/clojure-conference-london-clojurex-revival-tickets-81016794413 Obviously this is just for this channel. The info about the event doesn’t have the venue details, but once we have a venue confirmed, we can update it.
has there been any discussion as to how much the tickets for the community conf are going to be?
With four companies willing to help with the cost we could aim to go for free, or £1/5 as to have a minimal attendance commitment?
It should be free IMHO. There are people who actually paid a ticket for this and they don’t know when they are going to see their money back. The attendance commitment metric is useful, but given we can afford a venue for 150-200 I don’t think we risk overcrowding. The eventbrite page also has a top limit of 100 which is probably good to start with.
so while the 100 eventbrite tickets are “on sale” we can account for 75 additional people who could join anyway (it looks like that list is nowhere available unfortunately)
I assume the administrators would be willing to notify everyone of a replacement but I don't know if they'd actually be able to provide the list of attendees. Might violate user agreements, privacy, etc. Either way, isn't going to happen until they officially cancel, which they seem to be avoiding at the moment.
On our side, I guess people with a ticket will keep an eye on any news regarding the conf, including our effort as soon as we are ready to push things live. If we can’t get to them, hopefully they’ll get to us.
Re ticket situation, that’s why I asked, I got a ticket via a work scheme, and getting that refunded and redirected to alternative conference will likely take ages if at all
It’s a bit of a shame it’s such a short notice, but skillsmatter people couldn’t have helped it
sorry to hear @U82DUDVMH and like you others in the same situation.
I don't think there could be, since CodeNode/Skillsmater didn't come up with the name?
Even if we are free to use it, should it be connected (in the long term?) It is definitely connected this time.
I’ve collected the following so far: Clojure-Ldn Clojure-London Clojurians Conference ClojureY (credit AlexMiller) Clojure Community Exchange 2019 (credit Clément) Cloju Re-X (credit flefik)
I like ClojureY, as successor to “X” and the link to the Y-combinator. It is short and projects well into a logo (if ever we want one). Actually, Y is sorta λ in reverse.
Agree with the sentiment above. It’s definitely starting as a replacement for the first year, but the organization starts from a completely different mindset (e.g. free conf without link to a profit organization apart from sponsors). A little bit like that first Euroclojure in London.
Summary so far (no specific order) ClojureY (credits AlexMiller) Clojure Community Exchange 2019 (credit Clément) Cloju Re-X (credit flefik) Cλojure (credits reborg) Clojure-Ldn (credits reborg) Clojure-London (credits reborg) Clojurians Conference (credits reborg) parens.london (credits dotemacs) parens conf (credits dotemacs) in-ns ’london (credits dotemacs) defconf.london (credits dotemacs) fnconf - fnconf.london (credits dotemacs) sorted-conf (credits dotemacs)
If we’re going for re-use the suffix ‘X’, maybe we can go for: cloju:t-rex: that way we can register the emoji domain cloju:t-rex:.ws
The domain is available: https://xn--i-7iq.ws/emojidomain/cloju%F0%9F%A6%96
Interesting, but I’d probably keep it simple. So far, my fav is clojureY (it can read both “clojurey” or “clojure-y”, domain available, SEO friendly, short, type fast, mnemonic etc.)
clojureλ - with the ‘λ’ can be registered also https://xn--i-7iq.ws/emojidomain/clojure%CE%BB
You know ‘λ’ is a letter ‘l’, so why not that suggestion of yours @U054W022G of Cλojure ? The domain for that is also available, but with a TLD of .ws: https://xn--i-7iq.ws/emojidomain/c%CE%BBojure
Bit scared of the emoji thing (for portability, a github repo for example). But it could be full name “clojure-lambda” (for any portability) and Cλojure/Clojureλ as logo brand etc.
Maybe just go for clojure.london
as the domain, github repo… but the logo can be:
Cλojure λondon
Could just call it "Cλojure" and pronounce it "lambda con". Surprisingly, there's Google space for that.
Are you sure you want to focus this as London? It's often complained that London is like a black hole that sucks all into it. After all, we don't have Clojure Paris, or Clojure Berlin
Hopefully this conf could be hosted in Bristol (or anywhere else UK) next year. It’s true that ClojureD is always in Berlin, Dutch Clj Days in Amsterdam etc.
Ah, the age old problem of naming things - one of the most difficult things to do in programming 🙂
http://cce2019.org/com/net etc.. are all free
@U11EL3P9U I was also thinking of breaking it up like that
I agree with the sentiment about not wanting it to be perceived as london centric, however when it’s in Bristol it could be Clojure-Bristol and so on. Could be a series of conferences over the years visiting different cities. Interestingly the domain http://clojure.uk is available… that could be the parent, e.g http://bristol.clojure.uk, just thinking aloud…
Please avoid using anything that suggests any connection to the SkillsMatter conference, to avoid potential lawsuits. So similar names or the use of Exchange should be avoided. You have no idea who will buy SkillsMatter and what they may pursue. This conference should avoid being pitched as a replacement or alternative, as this also infers a connection. Pitch it as a new conference that is taking place.
@U3SG7RX7A when you have a second, can you remove “clojurex”, “exchange” etc from the eventbrite? Just put clojure conference for the moment. Any link between them is implicitly clear anyway.
Will do Done @U054W022G
There is probably enough choice to go for a poll to pick the name for the conf. The result should at least give an orientation toward 2-3 choices. If more ideas are coming in (and time permitting) we can add them to the list and recast votes: https://doodle.com/poll/7ths9keqxrqiwnyw

Might violate user agreements, privacy, etc. Either way, isn't going to happen until they officially cancel, which they seem to be avoiding at the moment.
If they notify attendees, they should at least be willing to put up a poster on the day, “Alternative conference happening at place XYZ”
My understanding is that administrators are focused on acquiring a buyer and ensuring no further losses. Posters cost money. I would not expect the administrators to contact any of the attendees either.
That would be nice. But I’m not sure what’s going on at SM these days, if there are people working at all and if the administrator is interested in shutting down things gradually.
My understanding is that no one is working at Skills Matter as all the staff have been let go. In administration they would not receive a salary and may already be missing some salary that is unlikely to be recovered. If you have enjoyed working with the SkillsMatter staff, please consider leaving positive feedback on their linked in profiles. Thank you.
They are searching for new investors/owners and if any they’ll need to decide what to do with the assets. Maybe every conf will be up and running next year, but unlikely this December
