Mornin'... slept in too long to mow the lawns this morning: it's already 26C "feels like 30C" (and the high will be 30C so...). Monday/Tuesday look much cooler... So, what's up with all the government folks resigning over there? I haven't been following world politics for a couple of weeks (for reasons) and it sounds like Labour are imploding 😞
Have there been more resignations? The last ones I heard about were the Defence Secretary and the Armed Forces Minister, who both resigned because the Government won't properly fund defence spending. In terms of imploding, I'd say Starmer's weak position is now even weaker, and it's pretty certain that if Andy Burnham wins the upcoming by-election (the outcome of that is far from certain) then he will challenge Starmer for the leadership. In more hopeful news, the resident doctors called off their strike while they consider a new offer from the Government.
I guess most of the resignations were in the middle of last year, now I look at the dates... Just feels like it's suddenly been in the news again... I guess it's the renewed calls for Starmer to step down. I used to be a staunch Labour supporter, back in the Blair days, but most of the time they seem to excel at shooting themselves in the foot...
Yeah, those two recent resignations added to the pressure on him, but he's not going to go quietly. This Labour government has been a huge disappointment, and if they endorse the anti-trans rhetoric coming out of the so-called Equality and Human Rights Commission, they will be presiding over the biggest roll-back of LGBTQ+ rights since Section 28.
As a queer person, I was surprised and very disappointed to see Labour shift on that 😞 Since I left in '99, the UK has gone backwards on that stuff so much...
Yeah, equalising the age of consent was one of the good things to come out of the Blair government.
