That's pretty flexible!

Advantages of a semi-public sector business which is also heavily unionised

weekends are too short, always.

dharrigan 2026-02-23T15:36:40.571499Z

I wonder if people would feel the same with a 4 day week?

seancorfield 2026-02-23T15:37:41.885559Z

I went for a couple of months where I took every Friday off to run down my accumulated vacation time and those 3-day weekends were a "good" length 🙂

seancorfield 2026-02-23T15:38:56.349049Z

(I'm probably going to do that again this year as I've managed to run up ~250 hours of vacation time -- over six weeks!)

thomas 2026-02-23T15:48:46.784669Z

Yup, I did that as well last year. Really nice

dharrigan 2026-02-23T16:05:59.959569Z

I too am lax in taking holidays

dharrigan 2026-02-23T16:06:12.721459Z

I usuually have weeks when I reach december, and I have to use them all up

seancorfield 2026-02-23T16:24:34.081609Z

We can accumulate up to 312 hours (39 days -- what a weird number!) and that can all carry over.

dharrigan 2026-02-23T16:28:16.796679Z

Lucky! We can only carry 5 days over each business year (April)

seancorfield 2026-02-23T16:31:19.395989Z

Wow, that is restrictive!

seancorfield 2026-02-23T16:32:28.458979Z

Mind you, when I was at Macromedia/Adobe, they instigated a "Summer Shutdown" -- where "everyone" was forced to take a week off in July to reduce the amount of banked vacation across the whole company, because folks weren't taking their time off as "expected".

seancorfield 2026-02-23T16:34:36.789559Z

A couple of years, I even had HR come after my team because I had two folks who pretty much refused to take time off. One would bank as much as possible so he could take it all in one go, in the winter, when he went off to be a "ski bum" for a while (I used to get him an exception to summer shutdown, so he could do that). The other was just a workaholic and also had a side gig that he worked Sat/Sun... so he was doing 8-10 hours, 7 days a week. Crazy.

We can save certain ours up to five years I think, not quite sure how it works though.
