👋

dharrigan08:02:37

Good Morning!

Kai13:02:37

Hi all. I'm considering moving back to the UK in the next year or two and was browsing Clojure jobs to get a feel of what was out there. Outside of London, a lot of job ads seem to be around the Bristol/Bath area. Does that sound right to those of you in the UK?

dharrigan13:02:56

A lot of jobs are transitioning (if not already) to 100% remote work

dharrigan13:02:19

The COVID situation has up-ended the perceived thought about being at an office 5 days a week

dharrigan13:02:45

The company I work for is 100% remote now.

Conor13:02:51

This is very true

Conor13:02:11

In the before times, the only places I have heard of Clojure jobs are Glasgow, Manchester and Dahn Sarf

Conor13:02:23

But nowadays it probably doesn't matter

dharrigan13:02:53

Maybe if you come back to the UK, you can choose somewhere nicer to live, like Scotland, with its rugged coastline (and people... :-)) instead of inner laaaawdan.

Kai13:02:30

So you reckon a lot of companies are going to keep working remotely after COVID has calmed down too? I'm in Japan and here a lot of companies went remote for the first wave or two of infections but have mostly gone back to the office now.

dharrigan13:02:47

Ah, Japan. It's hard to break through the mindset there.

Kai13:02:51

Yeah I'm not planning to live in London, so that sounds good to me

alexlynham13:02:57

here it's dollars and cents

alexlynham13:02:01

office space costs money

dharrigan13:02:23

Our company has decided not to renew the lease on our rented floors

alexlynham13:02:27

so letting people mostly wfh is a cost saving if you can organisationally survive it

alexlynham13:02:43

that makes sense, heard of lots of cos doing the same @dharrigan

djm13:02:46

My employer has also decided not to renew the lease on our office

dharrigan13:02:52

btw, I hope everyone is claming back the tax by working from home

dharrigan13:02:58

roughly 300 pa

djm13:02:14

But they are possibly also hoping that no one else will rent it, and that we might go back at some point, which is weird

dharrigan13:02:33

I think there will be a lot of empty office space.

Kai13:02:10

Sounds good. I won't worry too much about job locations in that case then

dharrigan13:02:18

Why move away from Japan?

dharrigan13:02:23

I do like Japan a lot

dharrigan13:02:30

Everything works.

Kai14:02:59

Everything works, but in a very Japanese way. Usually involving a lot of faxes and stamps

Kai14:02:24

The main reasons though are just more opportunities elsewhere and to be closer to family

Conor14:02:32

Too many tigers in Osaka-jo

dharrigan14:02:52

The food is so so good in japan

Kai14:02:52

Yeah the food here is pretty good. Eating out is really cheap too. The supermarkets aren't great though. I'd kill for a Tesco or Asda nearby

dharrigan14:02:59

I love 711's and Family Mart conveni

😂 3
oly14:02:39

I work at a small company in maidstone, we use python primarily but also some clojure but I recon we are pretty unique in that area, certainly bristol and bath seem to have quite a few jobs we are also looking for devs :)

dharrigan14:02:06

btw, here's that information about the tax rebate

dharrigan14:02:32

I am not your tax advisor, blah-di-blah-blah.... etc...

Jordan Robinson15:02:43

out of interest, is there much of a Clojure market in Japan? The stereotype is that it's all Ruby but I don't know how true that is or not

danm15:02:38

@barnes.kai Can confirm, just started this job and although the company is London-based the job is 100% remote, so I'm based out of Mancs but moving to York. We do seem to have a fair few devs from either London or Bristol though (and some in Europe)

Kai00:02:30

Good to know. Thanks!

danm15:02:50

Hmm, that http://gov.uk doc is unclear. Post-COVID, can I claim WFH costs if I am contracted to WFH but the company does technically have office space (a long way away), or does that count as "choosing to WFH"?

dharrigan15:02:05

Well, I claimed and got my tax code recently updated
