Morning 🙂
månmån
Good Morning. Yes, today, the SO gets a new iPhone 11. That’s fine. Her current phone is 4 years old. She holds on to these things.
I love how this counts as 'She holds onto these things' 😉 ./me looks at 6-year-old iPhone 6s
Going to have to replace it soon though, the battery is rubbish despite having been replaced not that long ago. It keeps powering off randomly when out in the cold
I had to buy one of those cases that have a built-in-battery last year, since yes, it would only last a couple of hours with it's regular battery. I blame her constant use of instagram, whatsapp, messenger....
There just hasn't been a compelling reason to upgrade except now because the battery life is crap. I would have got an 11 except I wanted 5G support for future proofing as I hope it will last me another 5+ years
I would have got a 12 already but we are planning a house move and various other things so need savings to spend on that as it is still functional
I think it'll be another 5 or so years before 5G is the "norm". In fact, my android just told me last week that it won't be getting any new updates since it's too old....maybe time to upgrade that....this time next year 🙂
I still remember when I had a 3G-only phone after 4G started to become a thing. They cannibalised chunks of the 3G... spectrum? Or maybe just how they were handling the signals at the base stations, not sure. But my 3G performance absolutely dropped off a cliff even loading the same sites etc after 4G stared to be rolled out. Don't want that again, so I want a phone that's 5G ready even if I don't live anywhere that uses it for a good few years
Though there are signs around Manchester saying it's already been rolled out here for some providers, and my next door neighbour is an industrial sparky doing a lot of the work setting up the kit, so hopefully I'd be able to take advantage quite soon
ha, my SO doesn't care about phones - she was searching for a new blowtorch last night and forcing me to research the differences btw butane / propane / acetylene
morning
Bom dia!
So you get "Black Friday" in the UK? I figured that since Brits don't do Thanksgiving, they also wouldn't do the crazy sales...
We never used to. Amazon is what really kicked it off. They started doing their Black Friday sales worldwide (makes sense I guess, annoying to see stuff all over the web about 'Amazon's Amazing Black Friday Deals' only to find it's 'Not your Amazon'), so all the other online and brick-and-mortar stores started to follow suit so as to not lose out on (even more) custom. So now we have 'Black Friday' despite not having any sort of pre-sale holiday or whatever to give it a reason.
(we actually went to friends for Thanksgiving dinner yesterday, because they'd gotten COVID-tested to see if they were safe to host us -- they got the results midday (negative) so we didn't have to eat reheated Indian leftovers for my wife's 60th birthday 🙂 )
@seancorfield Yeah Black Friday kinda exists but it’s not taken as seriously for bargains (as they usually aren;t actual bargains).
Today is the official start of "Christmas Season" in the US so lots of houses around us are already fully-decorated for the holidays (we don't bother). It's a pretty strange time of the year for a Brit here...
Northern Ireland is in lockdown and all non essential shops are shut. So Christmas shopping went out of the window from 00:01 this morning 🙂
The rest of the UK went into lockdown a week or so back, right?
Here they just closed gyms, indoor dining, and a few other things (again) but the shops are all still open -- despite the soaring case numbers 😞
Whereabouts in NI are you? (I was born and raised there in the '60s)
@seancorfield Limavady, on the north coast
Ah, not far from Coleraine where I lived for a while...
We had a holiday caravan almost on the beach in Portstewart for several years. Lovely part of the world.
(I think it was Portstewart... it was a long time ago, I'd have to go check my dad's autobiography to be sure)
I do like taking the ferry from Quigley's Point to Magillian and exploring the fine fine beaches and coastline
