Morning all

morning morning

dominicm08:06:17

Morning. Learning a new keyboard layout is so humbling. This activity you've been so good at for so long, it feels like it's gone!

Rachel Westmacott08:06:15

Oooh, what did you go for?

rickmoynihan09:06:04

Balanced “Effortless” Advanced Keyboard Layout 😆

dominicm09:06:44

The impression I got was that it's supposed to be possible to achieve above-average speeds with low effort.

dominicm09:06:56

I picked it for sheer novelty

rickmoynihan09:06:15

do you use the ergodex?

Ben Hammond10:06:37

great for rewiring your brain

dominicm10:06:13

That's what I figure, yeah

Ben Hammond10:06:18

I found I'd invested so much time into learning the Maltron key layout that I just ported it

Ben Hammond10:06:40

it annoys me that you cannot configure SHIFT chars though;

Ben Hammond10:06:04

= can only have a SHIFT char of +

Ben Hammond10:06:54

I suppose I could always configure a SHIFT equivalent as a new layer

dominicm10:06:37

I've considered building that hack

dominicm10:06:45

but I just have a symbol layer for my layout anyway

alexlynham11:06:06

I ultimately couldn't get my muscle memory locked in on the ergodox

alexlynham11:06:27

ended up going to the crkbd and that's been my daily for 18 months now

alexlynham11:06:55

got it pretty much perfect on the third try, heh

rickmoynihan11:06:50

Yeah borrowed an ergodox from a colleague for a while and really didn’t gel with it.

alexlynham11:06:48

I found it too big

alexlynham11:06:56

which is weird cos it doesn't have loads of keys

alexlynham11:06:07

but that's why a 42 key worked for me I think

alexlynham11:06:28

there's so few keys that when you're learning a radically new layout it doesn't require as much brainpower

minimal12:06:18

Oh I looked at the Corne recently as I feel like building another keyboard. I’ve been back on the atreus since lockdown. Replaced the old original firmware with QMK

mccraigmccraig12:06:31

once you've learnt a new layout, can you quickly switch back to a layout you already knew, like speaking languages - or is it more like upside-down-glasses, and takes a while to switch back ?

alexlynham12:06:13

takes a while to switch back

alexlynham12:06:38

like, I can type fine on a regular keyboard, it usually takes me a minute of hitting enter in the wrong place or something

alexlynham12:06:56

cos the crkbd is so small and enter is under my right thumb

alexlynham12:06:18

@U050CJW4Q a crkbd would be on brand for yr username

alexlynham12:06:41

plus I think the cheapest kit is like 70 quid, so it's not bank breaking

minimal12:06:39

Yeah it would. Blank atreus is already pretty minimal tbf.

minimal12:06:42

I don’t have a problem switching to a normal (row staggered) keyboard from a columnar one, can almost type as fast on one. I’ve never tried a non qwerty layout though

alexlynham12:06:09

yeah I'm still qwerty on the crkbd

alexlynham12:06:28

weirdly I can type faster on a regular keyboard still

alexlynham12:06:00

years of writing essays and whatnot I guess... but I find that my fingers are less tired and the smaller keeb feels better to use so that's the main attraction

Conor12:06:09

It is a mark of pride to have your keyboard cost $1000, you should know that

alexlynham13:06:41

trying to think of any that cost that much and drawing a blank?

minimal13:06:24

custom keyboards do the wallet damage

alexlynham13:06:23

keycaps not even included with that one lol

alexlynham13:06:46

and I thought I was bling with my imkulo crkbd and sa laser

minimal15:06:59

Lasers look nice. Need to get GMK to burn more money

mccraigmccraig15:06:58

smh, i'm going to spend my money on bikes instead

alexlynham15:06:57

@U050CJW4Q I'm enjoying SA as for such a small flat board it gives it a slightly domed profile

alexlynham15:06:11

also the THWOCK sound is so satisfying

alexlynham15:06:30

but I do wonder if the typing feel of GMK is more where my heart is ultimately at

alexlynham15:06:48

@U0524B4UW have you got a new bike yet? I'm living my best fixie life atm

mccraigmccraig15:06:19

sadly not @U79NZHC6A, but dalia is making noises about an e-mtb so she can paste me on the hills

minimal15:06:33

@U79NZHC6A Nice. I wish I could change mine easily. My atreus is matias so can only get alps keycaps. My keyboardio has none and my topre is v limited. Am getting the new keyboardio atreus which is cherry-mx compatible and hotswap so i’ll finally have some flexibility

minimal15:06:11

Yeah I love the thock of my realforce. My Atreus lacks weight and dampening

alexlynham16:06:52

mmm I've built this with hotswap and it's currently a mix but mainly hako royal clear

minimal16:06:21

The imk corne looks nice, especially for a split. I’m jealous of all the custom options that standard layouts get.
