Good Morning!

seancorfield05:03:01

They just announced at least another month of lockdown here (Bay Area, CA).

seancorfield05:03:14

"shelter-in-place"

dharrigan05:03:35

Looks like it's going to be 6 months here, that's the hints coming from the government

seancorfield05:03:59

We got takeout this weekend. Six main dishes from my favorite Indian place yesterday, and a full Southern comfort cooking dinner tonight from a high end place down the road. First time we've done takeout. Two weeks into the lockdown. We tipped both places 100% as a way to support them in these difficult times.

seancorfield05:03:41

I feel so bad for all the service workers who've been laid off 😞

dharrigan05:03:01

Yeah, small businesses are taking the brunt. The government here has introduced measures to help, but with all things, it has caveats.

dharrigan05:03:31

I know a few people (not working in computing) who have been laid off (permanently!) already.

seancorfield05:03:01

Yeah, one of our best friends told us both her husband and her daughter have been laid off 😞

seancorfield05:03:34

We're so very fortunate to be in an industry where we can work from home and business can continue online.

dharrigan05:03:34

Yes, agreed. It is something to be grateful for.

seancorfield06:03:36

I should go to bed. Beer's empty, and I need to be up in ten hours to call mum back in England...

dharrigan06:03:31

Sure, another day of working from home awaits (and loadbalancing my kid with my wife)

rhinocratic11:03:46

After a week indoors, I'm beginning to understand why dogs chew furniture.

mccraigmccraig11:03:31

@rhinocratic just stay away from glulam, chipboard and hardwoods - confine yourself to softwood furniture and you'll be fine

rhinocratic11:03:41

There's a nice pine coffee table to start on.

rhinocratic11:03:46

Also, this was a really bad time to resign from my job. 😬

dominicm13:03:34

It's a very odd time to have left mine. I think it'll be weird that on Monday I just connect somewhere else instead.

dominicm13:03:52

My whole commute will be identical.

rhinocratic13:03:09

My last 2 roles have been almost entirely remote, and switching was an odd experience - everything changed, yet stayed the same.

dominicm13:03:49

"Working conditions still bad?" 😂

rhinocratic13:03:49

Indeed. The place is freezing in winter. 😐

Ben Hammond13:03:37

where are you working next, @dominicm ?

dominicm13:03:18

Next week I'll be starting at http://commsor.com

3Jane13:03:51

cool! are they also a clojure company?

dominicm13:03:19

Yeah they are :) don't think I could leave clojure yet.

3Jane13:03:49

found an interesting tip for that

3Jane13:03:09

someone on twitter wrote that she buys herself a completely unnecessary weird thing at the start of every job

dominicm13:03:19

Yeah they are :) don't think I could leave clojure yet.

3Jane13:03:21

things like a small sculpture, or an antique electronic instrument

rhinocratic13:03:47

Always fancied a Theremin. Maybe I'll indulge myself if I land another job.:face_with_rolling_eyes:

3Jane14:03:26

+ some lasers and you can do a show of the JM Jarre variety 😄

3Jane14:03:48

as long as you don't have neighbours that is

Rachel Westmacott20:03:36

I can highly recommend owning a theremin, but they're not easy to play well. (at least I was never very good at it!)

3Jane13:03:46

if you put that on your desk, it's almost like moving to a new place

3Jane13:03:49

(not really XD )

dominicm13:03:12

Interesting. I actually did have plans to get a new desk and such... But corona has hindered those plans.

3Jane13:03:16

maybe rearrange stuff?

dominicm13:03:14

I did repaint, but l guess I did that too early...

Gulli15:03:05

One thing I misa after starting remote (almost 4 years now) is the occasional drink and activities. I did take up such an arrangement with some guys I met at a co-working office, but then they moved. Really missing going out for beers after a busy day at work

dotemacs15:03:58

Work from a local pub, then when when the day ends … 🍻

Gulli15:03:18

:face_with_cowboy_hat:

dotemacs16:03:54

Maybe when we survive all of this, we could organise (:drink 🍻)?

rhinocratic16:03:39

Virtual booze-ups via Hangouts just aren't the same.

dominicm16:03:02

It's the smell

acron17:03:31

Ale and pork scratching, nothing beats it

rhinocratic18:03:29

Quite so. Why does potpourri always smell of something like vanilla, lavender or patchouli? There must be a market for one that smells of "old git's watering hole".

alexlynham17:03:21

I miss my shared office

alexlynham17:03:41

I’m still forking out for it in the hope that we’ll be back in it in May, but…

dotemacs18:03:35

I was thinking that we do it in 🥩-space, like “for real”, not via spyware cams

dharrigan19:03:52

After a week of Kotlin programming (which is fine, I like it), I'm back to Clojure programming (which is fantastic, I love it 🙂 )

😂 4
