We're supposed to fly from San Francisco to Denver next week but I suspect that might get canceled, the way things are going over here. At this rate, I'm wondering whether we'll still get to Australia/New Zealand in August or England in September... 👀

dharrigan05:03:30

Good Morning!

folcon07:03:51

Morn’ just got back from trip, full self isolation with family…

folcon07:03:56

How’s everyone? Well I hope!

thomas07:03:04

mornig.... well, we are coping, kinda... still weird though

4
folcon07:03:26

Weird different?

thomas08:03:38

well, with us being all at home every day, all day long. usually only in the weekends, and those are different anyway.

guy09:03:17

Morning

folcon09:03:51

Makes sense =)…

Wes Hall10:03:11

Somebody on my facebook feed just suggested that supermarkets should just take the trolleys away. I know people will come up with some edge cases here, but I have to admit I found myself a bit annoyed with myself that I didn't think of that.

mccraigmccraig10:03:14

it does discriminate against people with more mouths to feed who aren't overbuying - it's going to be hard to shop for a family of even 4 for a week with just a basket

Ben Hammond10:03:21

encouraging 'little and often' shopping is probably helpful for smoothing supply issues

Ben Hammond10:03:34

but discriminates against the still working

Ben Hammond10:03:38

and the immobile

mccraigmccraig10:03:56

and isn't great for social-distancing

thomas10:03:30

make the shopping trolleys smaller ?

guy10:03:43

That’s patching the problem not really solving it imo

guy10:03:59

What if they just take two trolleys from now on

guy10:03:17

You could per item limits on things which seems to work near me

guy10:03:27

Max three bottles of Evian for example

Wes Hall11:03:19

@guy That's literally the most middle-class thing I have ever heard somebody say 😛

Wes Hall11:03:54

What's the pesto ration? 😉

guy11:03:53

No I mean to say in my Tesco there is a limit of three Evian per customer

guy11:03:02

It’s already in place haha

guy11:03:09

Toilet roll packets x4

guy11:03:19

That’s why I can go there and get what I need

Wes Hall11:03:21

But yeah, edge cases for sure, but honestly I can't see checkout staff being especially motivated to get into arguments with people who think the rules don't apply to them. It's sad but some kind of mechanical solution is probably required.

guy11:03:39

Yeah but they can put that in place on the self checkout

guy11:03:44

Can’t they ?

Wes Hall11:03:49

They struggle to stop people stealing at the self checkout. Honour system to some degree, which is also problematic right now sadly.

guy11:03:21

True true

3Jane12:03:09

taking away shopping trolleys is shit for people with mobility problems

3Jane12:03:05

as usual, if there are affordances for people with special needs, there will be bad agents who exploit this 😞

flefik12:03:29

so just post a guard by the trolleys

3Jane12:03:57

also: hi all. also stuck at home. got a hamster for company. forgot how noisy they are 😄

guy12:03:19

Awww cute

guy12:03:26

What’s it’s name

3Jane12:03:02

ah... so it was meant to be Brian the Ham

3Jane12:03:39

but after a closer look, it's female. can't decide whether I'll stick with Brian or rename to Brienne.

guy13:03:58

Haha great name(s)

3Jane13:03:17

ty 🙂 can't remember, do you have pets? (kids count)

guy13:03:36

Haha nah two kids

guy13:03:51

Four and three they are wonderful / terrors

3Jane13:03:46

what stage is that? somewhere past "always say no" and into "why???" I think?

😂 4
3Jane13:03:20

> they are wonderful / terrors qft

flefik12:03:58

or reserve some hours of shopping in the morning for the elderly and check ID on everyone entering during that time

seancorfield16:03:39

Several chains are doing this in the US. Opening early 7-9am just for seniors. That should be when the shelves are the most full. I don't know how it's working in practice.

mccraigmccraig17:03:48

i think sainsbury's is doing this now

mamapitufo19:03:44

my wife was telling me that the "senior hours" were super crowded, defeating at least one of the purposes of keeping them safe, I guess

3Jane12:03:24

did you see photos from US with armed guards guarding toilet paper?

flefik12:03:44

do you have a link?

3Jane12:03:30

looking now, people posted this on twitter

ben12:03:02

Only if you’re counting the US as civilised society!

3Jane12:03:37

truth 😞

dominicm13:03:18

This is funny 😂

dominicm13:03:36

Funnier than a mere reaction could handle

seancorfield16:03:07

It's a "typical" reaction of our gun-ridden culture, I'm afraid 😞

Conor12:03:54

Bidets are lit this year

rickmoynihan12:03:22

Folks need to stop worrying about toilet roll. In a week or two, probably less, the shelves will have a huge surplus of it for months; because nobody will be buying it anymore, as everyone has 3 months supply; it’s not like the whole of society is all of sudden going to the toilet 3x as often. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bullwhip_effect Oversupply can obviously cause other problems too

4
jasonbell13:03:57

@rickmoynihan Supply chains are fun! Damned by the bank if you have too much stock on hand, damned by the production line if you don’t have enough. I was working at Trebor Basset when foot and mouth broke out in the UK, that was fun! :

Ben Hammond13:03:50

does bertie basset have a big reliance upon sheep/cows?

Ben Hammond13:03:07

hmm perhaps I do not wish to know the answer to that

🙈 8
ben13:03:20

beef gelatine is presumably pretty important?

jasonbell14:03:37

@ben.hammond It was more Jelly Babies etc

Ben Hammond14:03:17

ah right Foot and Mouth interrupting the baby supply

mccraigmccraig14:03:28

do you have the inside scoop on why we only eat babies in this country @jasonbell? some other countries at least have the grace to wait until they are fully grown: https://www.google.com/search?q=seigdamer

Ben Hammond15:03:19

it's that bloody Doctor Who's fault

jasonbell15:03:20

@mccraigmccraig Alas I do not know, I just had order tons of them at a time.

Wes Hall15:03:58

I just read an (admittedly unverified) comment from somebody "within the system", who suggested that the BoE stopped at 0.1% today rather than 0% because there are some fears that it might break some old software.

Wes Hall15:03:33

Interest rate = falsey

😂 8
