My biggest issue with this is the nhs standard is to run at overcapacity at all times due to cuts from governments. So as great as this sounds all that will happen is a fight between Coronavirus victims and other ill people in hospital. That’s my two cents

If I was a high risk individual , I wouldn't necessarily agree with UK's strategy but on the other hand what do I know .

Have other viruses not been stopped before?

UK's strategy is insane. It looks a lot like eugenics by inaction to me.

So I was thinking of building a small web service: http://errand-help.co.uk The idea is to pair up volunteers with people aged 70+ in self isolation from COVID-19 to help them run errands such as grocery shopping/getting medicines/whatever else. The idea is to provide an SMS-based service to connect these volunteers with an elderly person who might not have a local support system available to them The +70 can text HELP SW1 1AA, and a volunteer will text VOLUNTEER SW1A 2AA. These two people will then be introduced to each other by the service through another text, so that they may exchange contact details. Comments? Good/bad/meh?

dominicm18:03:22

Do 70+ text? Maybe a phone service is better?

flefik18:03:54

good point

flefik18:03:32

how would you enter your post code with a telephone?

flefik18:03:30

voice recognition seems difficult unless there's a service for it already

thom19:03:39

This service would need very aggressive vetting and monitoring, to the point that you probably shouldn’t do it, however well intentioned it is. It just gives people automated access to isolated and vulnerable people.

thom19:03:04

I can put you in touch with some IT savvy people at Age UK though?

asier19:03:58

Local councils in Spain have started doing this with phones, no need of the post code,

> This service would need very aggressive vetting and monitoring, to the point that you probably shouldn’t do it, however well intentioned it is. flefik10:03:14

alternatively it could also accept only DBS checked individuals, although that complicates matters quite a lot

thom18:03:07

Every online platform needs to plan for the crimes it enables from the very start, that is just the world we live in unfortunately (unless you’re Uber or AirBnB and can just use VC money to outrun the lawsuits or whatever).

thom18:03:59

As I say, offer the help to AgeUK who have expertise in safeguarding, maybe they will think I’m being paranoid.
