Mornโ€™

dominicm13:12:46

My laptop is on the blink, dose anyone have a Linux laptop they'd recommend? System76 with a desktop cpu looks fun, but the import fees don't.

fmjrey13:12:04

Until recently I was using dell computers, cause they do support ubuntu (https://www.dell.com/en-uk/work/shop/laptops/sr/laptops/ubuntu?appliedRefinements=7692)

fmjrey13:12:50

Last year tried a Lenovo X1 carbon, been fine however it's not been 100% worry-free, ACPI issues and Thunderbolt support made me use latest mainline kernels on 18.04

fmjrey13:12:55

overall I'd recommend something that "officially" supports ubuntu

fmjrey13:12:07

or whatever distro

dominicm13:12:25

I'm using an xps13 now, the performance has been disappointing.

fmjrey13:12:45

two likely contributors to slowdown: intel spectre and meltdown fixes, gnome on 18.04 has been rather flaky recently, randomly freezing, memory leaking, had to disable gsconnect recently

dharrigan13:12:09

I use an X1 Extreme with Arch Linux

dharrigan13:12:13

works fanstatically well

dharrigan13:12:25

I believe @U05254DQM also uses one now ๐Ÿ™‚

fmjrey13:12:38

x1 extreme is also extreme in the size of its power adapter, don't drop it on your foot!

fmjrey13:12:12

135w if I recall

fmjrey13:12:42

and not usb c

dharrigan14:12:16

I have a small adapter

dharrigan14:12:26

it's really not that big at all

dharrigan14:12:01

There is a "brick" option you can get when purchasing, or you can choose another version with a lower wattage. So, all up to you really ๐Ÿ™‚

dharrigan14:12:52

I've not noticed the lack of usb c, there is a whole glut of adapters available

fmjrey14:12:37

oh so you can use say a 90w usb c adapter too on your x1 extreme?

dharrigan15:12:57

I do, I even use a 65w one

Dell XPS Developer edition with Ubuntu straight from the factory (they definitely still sell it but you'll have to explore the Dell site to find it, the page Google has indexed is out of date)

dominicm18:12:47

The x1 extreme processor is 25% faster than my current one, but it has an actual graphics card which will give me a nice boost.

alexlynham09:12:38

when my macbook spat the dummy the other month I did 6 weeks full time on my 2015 lenovo thinkpad carbon

alexlynham09:12:05

with 8GB more ram (it only has 8GB) it would be fine

alexlynham09:12:52

and thatโ€™s running backend repl, api repl, node/shadow build, kafka and cassandra plus misc tools & chrome open for dev - was basically fine, so Iโ€™m sure the current ones are even better

yogidevbear22:12:13

Morning ๐Ÿ˜„ Has anyone else binged The Witcher yet?

seancorfield22:12:50

We're on episode 6 right now.

dominicm22:12:13

It's good? I really enjoyed the game, but I don't think it'll be similar.

seancorfield23:12:52

Henry Cavill is surprisingly good. The timeline gets a bit confusing as it jumps back and forth in the first few episodes.

We finished the series last night. Loved it. I quite liked the timeline element of it. It wasn't obvious at the start either

No spoilers please! ๐Ÿ™‚

yogidevbear09:12:38

Yup, my lips are sealed ๐Ÿค

Aleksander10:12:05

@U0MFQNXFZ I liked the moment when I realised it!
