mogge 😼

dharrigan10:09:44

I will spending this afternoon coding in Clojure

dharrigan10:09:49

I've had enough of Kotlin and Spring for today

dominicm10:09:01

But your application context needs you

😂 4
dharrigan10:09:16

I know, but, here's the thing, I don't need it 🙂

folcon12:09:54

I really should start doing this, https://xkcd.com/2200/

Ben Hammond13:09:05

Heh. Puts me in mind of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=76dmEkm1x7U&t=3820 > Its was intedend that the secret should remain buried in oblivion for thousands of years > if it has come before your eyes, oh unfortunate ones

folcon12:09:51

Actually how many people here do find the time to do side projects?

dominicm12:09:54

I dip in and out

dominicm12:09:07

sometimes I can find lots of time for them, and sometimes I just cannot.

dharrigan12:09:56

I'm the same

dharrigan12:09:04

I try to do an hour or so every day

mccraigmccraig12:09:09

i have zero time for side projects atm. work+family+exercise+sleep>=24h

dharrigan12:09:19

but it depends on real-life-getting-in-the-way

thomas13:09:11

I sometimes get round to side projects... and when I like it I put in quite a few hours... but something else has to give in that case.

dharrigan13:09:35

What I try to do, is when I write some Kotlin code, I also port it to Clojure

👍 8
dharrigan13:09:49

so I do a bit everyday if I can

thomas13:09:13

what is your experience doing both Kotlin and Clojure like that?

dharrigan13:09:23

Pretty good actually. I find the mental flip not to bad, since I also try to write kotlin code in a more functional way 🙂

dharrigan13:09:34

and I keep the code bursts to a few lines each time 🙂

dharrigan13:09:42

think think...code....think think...

folcon13:09:27

I've been looking at swapping contexts like that when coding, I think it leads to better output as I'm thinking about how the code is used in different ways :)

dharrigan13:09:17

Kotlin is a nice fit as it definitely encourages a more functional style of programming. Of course, no-where-near as functional as Clojure, but definitely a step up from Java.

folcon13:09:00

I’ve never used it in anger, so not sure I’ve got much of an opinion about of it…

jasonbell14:09:27

@folcon <<Actually how many people here do find the time to do side projects?>> In terms of programming projects, not any more. Side projects are basically book writing and programme committees for conferences.

folcon15:09:03

How is that @jasonbell? Do you prefer that? Or miss not doing coding side projects?

Conor15:09:21

My side projects are playing computer games

Conor15:09:11

I do enough computer touching during work, I don't feel like doing any more afterwards 🙂

danielneal15:09:17

how do you play computer games without touching a computer 😛

Conor16:09:30

Very carefully

seancorfield15:09:42

I maintain a bunch of Clojure libraries as side projects -- but mostly because we use them at work and I can also work on them sometimes during work hours. But I've done FOSS stuff as side projects for about 25 years...

jasonbell15:09:31

@folcon Bit of a weird time as I’m not doing any full time development, I’m all Kafka/Cassandra devops. The book writing, it’s contractual so that takes priority. The conference stuff…. well that’s just fun but with a long term arc.

folcon18:09:08

Ok, that makes sense =)…

folcon18:09:44

Sean I know of simply because you seem to be everywhere =)…

seancorfield18:09:17

@folcon We come in six-packs 🙂 That's how we're everywhere 🙂
