offtopic of the day 😄

zyxmn10:02:56

Not much is currently known about what all those squeaks mean damn , I was hoping we can talk to rats now

3Jane11:02:59

No, they’ve only just started

3Jane11:02:24

Given how long it’s taken them to do anything about whale song, I’m not surprised. But rats are much more accessible as animals, so I’m having high hopes!

otfrom08:02:45

morning

☀️ 5
guy09:02:52

Morning friends!

danm10:02:10

@seancorfield We just watched the first episode last night, having finished Russian Doll. Definitely liking it so far

danm10:02:23

And I do agree, very different story but a bit of a Watchmen vibe

dominicm11:02:12

What's for lunch today?

dominicm11:02:27

I don't know what to have :D.

Ben Hammond11:02:41

fresh bread from the bread machine

Ben Hammond11:02:57

I might spoil that with some tinned tomato soup

Ben Hammond11:02:35

(but perhaps I should be husbanding my tinned soups)

3Jane11:02:05

tomato on bread is 😋 though, so I think that fits…

Ben Hammond11:02:12

are you still in the uk @lady3janepl? Where have you ended up?

3Jane11:02:46

Still in the UK

Ben Hammond11:02:06

planning to see how it turns out?

3Jane11:02:24

Yeah, I’m keeping my fingers crossed things work out

3Jane11:02:44

(for a relative value of “work out”)

3Jane11:02:17

I’ve poked around and London is currently the best option, short of leaving overseas. We’ll see.

Ben Hammond11:02:22

well you've always got your EU citizenship

3Jane11:02:25

There’s that. “Move back into parent’s basement and start a startup” 😄

🤓 20
💵 20
3Jane11:02:51

Over time, I think depending on what your resources are, the deciding factors change. Right now, for me, it’s the social part, having people to interact with daily in a meaningful manner (ie not just shopping). Therefore moving anywhere where I don’t speak the language, or speak it poorly (German), is an immediate fail.

folcon11:02:10

Morning :)…

waving 5
3Jane11:02:00

(One big advantage of Poland over UK is that we actually have basements, nyah nyah! 😛 )

😁 5
3Jane11:02:52

But yeah, “startup” is a serious contender if disaster strikes. After all, a small company doesn’t need to be THE BEST, it just needs to make a living.

danm11:02:59

Hey! Some houses in the UK (outisde London) have basements! 😛

danm11:02:22

Hell, the last place I was in the basement had been converted to the kitchen and dining room. It was very weird

danm11:02:19

Our place now has a 70cm or so void under the floorboards with a dirt floor at the base. So you could stuff a body down there, but not do much else with it

😂 5
danm11:02:30

It's been handy to run all the network cables through though

Ben Hammond11:02:54

Yeah I've got one of those. They call it a solum which was a new word to me

3Jane11:02:07

I wouldn’t know, I’ve always lived on terrain with a likelihood of flooding ^^'

😂 5
3Jane11:02:25

Are these basements maybe only like, wine cellars?

Ben Hammond11:02:01

well I think its mostly to allow air to circulate around the floorboards

3Jane11:02:02

(otoh I think people here do very well without basements, having instead switched to sheds. I’ll take working in a shed over working in a basement!)

Ben Hammond11:02:05

to discourage rot

jasonbell11:02:50

@dominicm <<What’s for lunch today?>> (rand-nth ["Pot Noodle" "Pot Noodle" "Pot Noodle"]) 🙂

🍜 15
😂 5
Ben Hammond12:02:10

but there's more than one flavour

3Jane12:02:02

Aren’t you guys happy there was a zombie apocalypse craze in popculture for the last X years? Now everyone knows how to prep.

jasonbell12:02:40

@lady3janepl After playing The Last Of Us hundreds of times I firmly think I’m in a good position.

dominicm12:02:39

apparently that clip isn't relevant to pot noodle 😞

dominicm12:02:20

but yeah that episode is what pot noodle makes me think of

zyxmn12:02:39

Lunch today was free bagels at the Co-workings space I work in. 1) Salmon and cream cheese 2) Pastrami, mustard and gherkins

practicalli-johnny12:02:38

@dominicm 9 mins 20 seconds into this is what you were referring too https://youtu.be/Nv5c-tV8PUo

👍 10
dominicm12:02:53

That's exactly it!

practicalli-johnny12:02:13

@dominicm I recommend watching Zombie land movie, it's a good guide to surviving a zombie apocalypse

thomas12:02:55

Dutch houses don't have to have basements either... to much water already here.

danm12:02:18

Zombieland 2 is out this year innit?

danm12:02:22

Or is that 2020?

otfrom16:02:22

@alex.lynham I'm using your theme now. I like it. Very garish. Suits me perfectly. 🙂

otfrom13:02:52

the problem w/zombie prep is that it is prepping for the wrong threat. 😉

flefik13:02:19

you’re more of a vampire guy eh?

otfrom13:02:48

nah, I'm more of a "it is going to look like a totalitarian state" kind of guy

otfrom13:02:21

more like the bit before Doctorow's "The Walkaway" but perhaps w/o the post scarcity

otfrom13:02:31

or like Gibson's "The Peripheral"

dominicm13:02:13

A total vampire apocalypse would be pretty much how we live today, except at night, and it would be enforced by death

otfrom13:02:21

the klept in charge. The rest of us scrabbling around and subject to extremes from the security forces if we decide to get uppity. Private security getting more power.

dominicm13:02:33

no wonder vampires are always angry. But I guess vampires are less angry now that there's a 24h Asda in my area.

otfrom13:02:37

@dominicm very 30 Days of Night 🙂

alexlynham13:02:06

I kinda tend toward it’s going to be a deregulated dystopia where life is cheap, a la the Richard Morgan/Takeshi Kovacs novels, Stevenson’s Snow Crash, Escapology by Ren Warom, etc

otfrom13:02:09

I bet they love Amazon too if they can get a good drop off point. Not so good if they need to get it from a neighbour tho

otfrom13:02:20

not read Warom

otfrom13:02:40

I think Snow Crash doesn't have enough administrative force rumbling around

otfrom13:02:07

I think there will be a lot of regulation for us

otfrom13:02:11

not so much for the klept

guy13:02:56

Dumb Clojure question of the day: Do you ever test private functions and if so, how?

Ben Hammond13:02:21

there is a standard hack to access private functions which is to ((deref (var private-function-symbol)) or (@#'private-function-symbol) in the vernacular

guy13:02:36

ahh nice one thanks

Ben Hammond13:02:07

personally I've always regretted declaring vars as private

5
guy13:02:29

me too, but its a project consistency thing 🤷

Ben Hammond13:02:26

I always want to try them out from the repl

dominicm13:02:18

@guy testing a private var isn't worth it.

👀 5
dominicm13:02:37

although, little known feature of clojure.test, you don't need to put your tests in the test folder.

dominicm13:02:06

you can just sprinkle them alongside your normal code, which would then give access to the private var.

dominicm13:02:27

but yeah, firmly in the camp of "Testing your public functions should test your interface sufficiently"

👍 15
guy13:02:17

Out of interest do you ever fdef your functions?

dominicm14:02:49

Rarely. A comment achieves the same thing. Spec is too alpha for me.

👍 5
3Jane13:02:05

re snow crash, there’s a series I’ve been meaning to read

3Jane14:02:07

Centenal Cycle (Infomocracy, Null States, State Tectonics)

danm14:02:24

I found the ending of Snow Crash deeply disappointing. And Cryptonomicon

danm14:02:48

But by the time he wrote Anathem Neal Stephenson had worked out how to write an ending

danm14:02:07

I don't know at what point in between those he learnt it though

3Jane14:02:42

Yeah, it was kinda meh. I liked the central idea he was working towards (the me)

3Jane14:02:19

Also cool: I was researching Sumerian religion and Inanna specifically at the time I read it, and I only got a used copy of Snow Crash by accident. Or was it by accident…

thomas14:02:06

testing is overrated anyway...

3Jane14:02:02

pitchforks out!

🍴 5
Ben Hammond14:02:04

I enjoyed The Diamond Age although I don't find myself refllecting on its content very often

alexlynham14:02:32

yeah Seveneves is ace as well if you’ve not read it

Ben Hammond14:02:18

Nymphomation seems to be slowly coming true

otfrom16:02:22

@alex.lynham I'm using your theme now. I like it. Very garish. Suits me perfectly. 🙂

alexlynham18:02:31

We aim to please

otfrom18:02:21

you certainly have done 🙂

jonpither18:02:12

Cryptonomicon was a long read, but some awesome bits. Snow crash yeah... Overrated. Anathem is awesome imo. Quicksilver I couldn't make it through.

jonpither18:02:38

Seveneves was brilliant imo, the last bit a tad far fetched tho.

jonpither18:02:48

Can't wait for the seveneves TV show.

joetague18:02:10

I also enjoyed the Cryptonomicon. I took Snow Crash on holiday last week and left it at the airport after reading a few chapters

yogidevbear19:02:10

Any opinions on Neuromancer? (Disclaimer: I haven't read it yet)

👍 10
Ben Hammond09:02:10

you have to read it at least twice; first reading didn't make much sense to me, there's just too much going on

👍 5
Ben Hammond09:02:44

the 2 sequels are much easier to read because they are less rammed with ideas

maleghast09:02:18

It's a true classic of the Cyberpunk genre - well worth your time.

danm11:02:01

It's amazing. I re-read it a few weeks ago

3Jane19:02:39

I loved it when I first read it (self evident)

3Jane19:02:40

It had an interesting mix of action and politics, technology and mysticism. I wonder though if it’s not going to suffer from the fact that its twists are now popular cliches

3Jane19:02:18

I have a feeling Gibson was the touchstone

3Jane19:02:02

If you want some less well known cyberpunk, I would recommend Vurt and Pollen. Both set in Manchester I believe :D

Conor21:02:33

Neuromancer still holds up IMO

3Jane21:02:17

I mean, whether it will hold up for a person reading it for the first time now.

3Jane21:02:40

I remember someone complaining to me that Warhammer ripped off World of Warcraft and I didn’t know what to say

😂 5
😡 5
guy21:02:22

just do 🙂
