Morning 👋

Conor10:01:39

Did you buy a magic bike

danm10:01:10

Hah, I wish

danm10:01:58

Remortgage of the house was short, so had to make up the difference. TV packed in, so went to buy a new one. Except then found out that you can't get reasonable TVs as small as our old one was any more, and a bigger one wouldn't fit on the stand we had, so bought a good new stand and spent most of a week painting that up to match our colour scheme before we got the TV. Then the TV was more expensive that we were told originally. Then the dog was ill and threw up all over the rug, which was a bit grotty despite attempts at wash-vacuuming already, so we ended up getting a new one of those too. Tried to take my phone in for a battery replacement on Saturday and got told Apple won't touch it because it has corrosion and water damage inside, so I'm trying to work out getting a new phone on insurance when I need to keep hold of something to store my Google Auth 2FA codes for a ton of things on

Conor10:01:37

For want of a nail

danm10:01:15

I've never actually dropped this phone in water, so it must have got damaged one of the times I cycled home in driving rain with it in my bag. Once I've got it sorted I should probably try and upgrade to one of the waterproof ones or something, but 6s is best phone

thomas10:01:55

sounds like quite a weekend @carr0t

maleghast14:01:55

Morning All 🙂

thomas14:01:06

so just to clear something up (and apologies for introducing politics again...) if there is no deal... then the dreaded backstop would come into force? so best way to avoid the backstop is to accept the deal there is now???? I must be missing something innit? 😕

otfrom14:01:27

current deal that was voted down in Westminster has the backstop in it. I'm a bit vague about whether or not a backstop has been agreed previously even in the event of no deal.

otfrom14:01:52

the backstop comes into force if no trade deal can be figured out after the withdrawal deal expires IIUC

otfrom14:01:31

happy path for May is "agree current withdrawal deal. Get trade deal sorted out in 2 years (whatever that is). No need for backstop."

thomas14:01:23

I thought that the backstop had already been legally agreed up on

thomas14:01:15

aah ok... I see what you are saying... there is a 2 year period anyway for sorting out a trade deal.

thomas14:01:32

and only then the backstop can come into force.

thomas14:01:45

makes sense now (if that is possible at all)

alexlynham15:01:54

in the event of no deal there's no backstop

alexlynham15:01:02

backstop was part of withdrawal agreement

otfrom15:01:48

@alex.lynham that was my understanding overall, but I had thought there was something that was agreed previously. I think you are correct tho.

thomas15:01:51

but in case of a no-deal how would the EU prevent a hard border between NI and RI?

thomas15:01:52

well... hmmmm that would be pretty bad IMHO.

jasonbell15:01:29

Well two words spring to mind for that, civil war.

jasonbell15:01:54

It’s all kicking off again but it’s not so much down to Brexit, it’s a combination of things.

otfrom15:01:25

quite worrying that car bombs have already started up again in Derry/Londonderry

jasonbell15:01:33

Two more hijackings today as well

maleghast15:01:12

If ignorance in England and Wales were to lead to strife returning full bore to Northern Ireland that would be an ignominious note in history 😞

maleghast15:01:40

I don't understand how anyone who lived through the 70s and 80s can even risk it... 😞

jasonbell15:01:00

I do get the feeling that May would happily hive NI off to an all Ireland so it was something less to worry about. That would lead the same outcome, lots of fighting.

jasonbell16:01:14

Ultimately no one will take notice until it happens in Belfast, but this is a Clojure community so I’ll call it a day on this.

otfrom16:01:26

@jasonbell sending you the parentheses of love

jasonbell16:01:04

As long as Morton’s serve fish then all’s good @otfrom 🙂

maleghast16:01:23

I also send the parentheses of love to you and all of our countryfolk in NI, @jasonbell

alexlynham16:01:08

yep, stay safe out there @jasonbell

jasonbell16:01:55

oh I’m safe

dominicm16:01:56

Doesn't the good Friday agreement prevent a hard border ?

jasonbell16:01:01

There was talk of that getting torn up.

alexlynham17:01:32

yeah I guess if we don't leave the ECJ (which is technically separate to the EU, so maybe we don't leave it by default?) then it could apply, but I think that's the 'backstop' & requires a customs union

alexlynham17:01:39

although might be wrong

jasonbell17:01:12

It’s all pretty messed up.

alexlynham17:01:05

how callous people can be about something like this is stunning to me

alexlynham17:01:10

it's like there are no adults in the room
