What’s the TLDR? Trying to understand the abstract… Is it using dependent types to describe wireformats and generate provably correct parsers for them from the types?

rickmoynihan10:12:59

I find it frustrating how many configuration languages accidentally (and almost immediately) become turing complete

dominicm14:12:58

aero is a little like that 😄

rickmoynihan16:12:06

it is… but it’s pretty damn useful too 🙂

@alex.lynham As you were asking about laptops, I’ve used Mac book pros, dells and Thinkpad laptops for the last 10 years and Thinkpads have given me the best overall experience by far. With my own money, I would only buy a Lenovo Thinkpad. - keyboard is the best I have ever used on any laptop, especially when touch typing. - have very good battery life, especially for their weight. Some models have external batteries and second batteries that can be added for longer life (e.g x200 range) - wide range of models and specs to choose from and latest Carbon X1 Extreme supports 32Gb RAM (If buying new, I recommend selecting lowest spec model you want and upgrading components, this avoids paying ~£70 for Microsoft Windows professional edition) - Thinkpads have much higher build quality than all other laptops, which is why they last so long (some of the cheaper Lenovo laptops are not the same though, so stick with the Thinkpad range) - runs Linux without any problems (lots of people use Thinkpads with Linux, so any issues are quickly fixed) - most models come with 3 year warranty and they will repair your laptop for free at your home or office (they can afford this because they rarely go wrong) - spare parts are widely available at reasonable prices for outside the warranty. - there are lots of good quality second hand or refurbished Thinkpads available are very reasonable prices

alexlynham10:12:58

> there are lots of good quality second hand or refurbished Thinkpads available are very reasonable prices I had not considered this point

practicalli-johnny10:12:30

Ooooo, I might get on of those myself....

alexlynham10:12:08

needs a ram upgrade prob, but for £400.... that's a great on-the-go linux machine

alexlynham10:12:19

so will still drive a large monitor iirc

practicalli-johnny10:12:46

8Gb ram is what I have for my 3rd Gen laptop and haven’t had any problems running out of memory (once I managed my chrome tab habit with The Great Suspenders plugin). Recommend emailing the seller about upgrading ram to see if there is a slot free, should you want too.

alexlynham10:12:13

is that a thinkpad 3rd gen?

alexlynham10:12:55

seems like on the carbon models the ram is often not upgradeable

alexlynham10:12:07

tbf my 2013 MBP is 8GB and I've not had an issue being productive

maleghast10:12:10

Morning All…

3Jane11:12:51

…how would you mod it to look slightly less awful?

3Jane11:12:48

(I know, I know, look, it’s 2 days to Christmas break and I just haven’t got bigger problems right now)

alexlynham13:12:18

> …how would you mod it to look slightly less awful? mod what?

maleghast13:12:13

That's what I was going to ask...

3Jane13:12:20

Mod Thinkpad. It looks awfully rubbery. After poking around I found out that recent thinkpad yoga look all right-ish, but it’s 13'‘ and the ones with i7 cpu have a price roughly equal to a 2015 used 15’' mbp ¯\(ツ)

3Jane13:12:58

(I have used a thinkpad in corporate past and it was a solid brick, very reliable for the time but entirely uninspiring)

3Jane14:12:44

(problems with drivers, esp. linux)

alexlynham14:12:27

mmm that's yoga/thinkpad yoga not thinkpad carbon though?

3Jane14:12:11

That’s true.

folcon15:12:06

Just curious, did anyone else watch the talk by Polis at the conj yet? Curious to know people’s perspectives if they did…

folcon15:12:45

Happy to link to the talk if anyone else wants it

seancorfield16:12:45

Yes, I thought it was very interesting. I'd have to dig up my notes for more detail.

folcon15:12:55

Would definitely be interested in hearing more about this :)…

seancorfield17:12:31

My notes on that talk are less than brief 😞 I think I listened a lot, was fascinated, but overall I didn't have any takeaways from it, at least from a technical p.o.v.

seancorfield17:12:55

I was impressed that they managed to break the gridlock on some contentious public policy issues tho'...

folcon20:12:21

That’s basically where I ended up :)…

seancorfield16:12:04

It made me wonder what it would have made of Brexit 🙃

folcon23:12:25

Yes, I’ve been having a few chats around that with some friends as well, vtaiwan, which is where this kind of thing is happening in practice is really intriguing…

folcon23:12:01

Would love to hear in more detail what stood out :)…
