Morning All!

maleghast10:12:21

How's Everyone doin'?

jasonbell10:12:30

knackered in all honesty.

jasonbell10:12:34

how about you?

maleghast10:12:41

I am in London on a Friday, so not ideal...

maleghast10:12:06

Sorry to hear you are knackered @jasonbell

jasonbell10:12:37

Yeah I did the easyJet TwoStep yesterday to that there London town too.

3Jane11:12:50

not knackered yet, but given office christmas party and salespeople who’ve bought a karaoke machine …

jasonbell11:12:15

@mccraigmccraig It’s all relative sir.

practicalli-johnny11:12:15

not knackered yet also, but will be by the end of Monday (Clojure hack day Saturday at SkillsMatter, Clojure virtual study group and coaching sessions on Sunday and a talk on Emacs on Monday night)

otfrom11:12:25

@mccraigmccraig Jade can be very tiring. 😉

otfrom11:12:35

(teasing, saying it w/love! stop hitting me!)

jasonbell11:12:06

I’m actually too tired to retaliate/respond or otherwise. So fill yer boots and carry on. 🙂

otfrom11:12:06

@jr0cket that sounds pretty busy. How many miles on the bike will you get in w/that?

practicalli-johnny11:12:23

Only about 84km (divided between Saturday and Monday)

mccraigmccraig11:12:24

what does the venn diagram of #clojure-uk members and cyclists look like ?

Conor11:12:12

Not so, I can't ride a bike

maleghast11:12:36

I used__ to be a cycle commuter AND "for fun and health" cyclist. I am about to start riding for health again, assuming the weather permits whilst I am in Scotland for the next few weeks.

thomas13:12:40

and welcome back @cfeckardt!

otfrom14:12:57

@maleghast Get a fatbike (esp w/studded tyres) should be great for around you. Good on sand, mud and snow

otfrom14:12:09

(studs mean you'll not slip on ice either)

otfrom14:12:24

I'm looking at one for getting on the beach around here

maleghast14:12:32

Tempting... I have a gravel bike,,,

otfrom14:12:20

I'm going to see if I can stop at a Brompton and a fat bike.

otfrom14:12:31

It is possible to stop buying bikes isn't it?

otfrom14:12:37

I can hire one if I need to. 😉

otfrom14:12:10

(I'm currently considering a Surly Wednesday or a Trek Farley, but I'm putting it off for a bit)

otfrom14:12:11

(IIRC @mccraigmccraig is a mountain biker and will soon tell us what a fool I am)

mccraigmccraig14:12:20

well @otfrom, a gravel bike makes sense if you mainly want to ride unmetalled roads and the like, but it doesn't have to get much rougher before you are going to want some suspension

maleghast15:12:39

I am not allowed to just keep buying bikes, so I will need to put the "Fat Bike" (I do feel targeted by this designation) to one side for now... Maybe if I can be out riding every day for the next few months then I can make a case for one..?

otfrom15:12:52

gotta go for year round riding 🙂

otfrom15:12:13

easy for @mccraigmccraig to do in the beautiful south

otfrom15:12:45

@maleghast I bet there is somewhere near you that would hire one on a snowy day

maleghast15:12:16

Possibly, though the Bike Cafe in Aberfoyle is seasonal

mccraigmccraig15:12:22

@otfrom have you ever ridden on soggy chalk ? it might be generally soggier up north, but soggy chalk is a more awful surface than anything

otfrom15:12:35

@mccraigmccraig I've not done soggy chalk. The only things I ever found impassible on 2 wheels are snow deeper than 4 inches and snow with a sheet of ice on top going uphill.

otfrom15:12:04

but I don't have studded tyres any more (tho they do them now for Bromptons if you are willing to tape up your frame so they don't scratch when you fold it)

otfrom15:12:29

@thomas ah, to have all the infrastructure and a flat country. 🙂

otfrom15:12:38

do you not get problems with ice in the winter?

thomas15:12:27

they tend to grit the cycle paths, so most of the time it is ok.

thomas15:12:05

I posted a pic of my bike over in #brompton

mccraigmccraig15:12:06

@otfrom studs may work on soggy chalk

maleghast15:12:46

I have to be honest, snow on the ground puts paid to cycling for me.

otfrom15:12:41

@maleghast I know you can gets studded tyres for your bike. The fat bike is really only for the deep stuff or going on a snowy trail

otfrom15:12:55

so no need to stop riding, and you don't need to get a new bike. Just some winter tyres

maleghast15:12:56

I am still of the opinion that snow stops cycling

otfrom15:12:14

it only stops fair weather cyclists.... 😉

otfrom15:12:48

time to change then. 😄

mccraigmccraig15:12:07

my latest acquisition is a beast of a 6klumens light so the darkness of winter need no longer be a barrier to trail riding

otfrom15:12:00

never let snow or cold stop you

otfrom15:12:35

that was -15C (w/o wind chill)

otfrom15:12:25

@mccraigmccraig what light rig did you get?

mccraigmccraig15:12:57

@otfrom magicshine monteer 6500 - it's not as funky as the exposure lights (with all of their speed and gradient based auto power-tuning), but it's amazingly bright, built like a brick shithouse, lasts for about 5hrs on 1500 lumens, and is less than half the price of the exposure lights

alexlynham15:12:48

I do miss cycling in the south… if only for the weather. Did find that on farmers’ fields and sandy tracks (surrey/north downs) sometimes you would lose the back wheel and end up on your face mind you

alexlynham15:12:10

(that was a mountain bike w/ front fork suspension, I’m a road cyclist these days)

alexlynham15:12:41

@mccraigmccraig’s descriptions of night trail riding terrify me 😱
