Good Morning from a VERY wet Aberfoyle - how are we all?

agile_geek09:11:19

Bore da @maleghast from an also very wet Washington (Tyne and Wear before you think I'm stateside)

maleghast09:11:57

Bore da 🙂 Seems I should be sayin' "Why aye!"

maleghast09:11:40

I dinnae na that you wus livin' amongst Geordies.

dominicm09:11:48

Tired. I'm getting bad at going to bed when I mean to 😊

maleghast09:11:42

Oh I know all about that @dominicm, though I was in bed at 10 to 10 last night! (this allowed me to be up at 0545h to go for a walk, in yet another attempt to get back into the swing of regular exercise)

3Jane10:11:59

timezone change messing with sleep times :(

dominicm10:11:09

A morning walk has made a big difference to me too recently 😊 It must be freezing out do early

dominicm10:11:44

@lady3janepl oh, that explains it. I'm sleeping an hour later, and waking up an hour later.

3Jane10:11:53

Same. I switched to a sunlight lamp but it still takes time to adjust.

3Jane10:11:56

In the Middle Ages we had no such nonsense! Down with UTC!

dominicm10:11:42

Maybe next year

maleghast10:11:37

Hehe - I am laughing at he idea of ending UTC

3Jane10:11:13

Timexit means timexit

maleghast10:11:12

@dominicm - It was freezing and VERY WET, but I did it anyway, 'cos it's the only way I'll ever be more active.

mccraigmccraig10:11:09

@maleghast i ended up doing a bunch of 05:00 starts this summer to get exercise time in - sleep was the only flexible variable in the family+work+exercise+sleep=24h equation

maleghast10:11:00

Yeah, I know what you mean @mccraigmccraig - I need to get into a rhythm of early to bed, early to rise and thus I have the time to exercise.

dominicm10:11:21

That rhymes. Is it a pre existing rhyme?

dominicm10:11:41

Or is this a poet, didn't know it situation?

maleghast11:11:32

I meant to make it rhyme 😉

maleghast11:11:38

I am a poet and I know it 🙂

3Jane11:11:05

bardic soul

Rachel Westmacott11:11:28

surely “down with BST”?

3Jane11:11:57

no, cos it’s BRITISH summer time

3Jane11:11:58

it’s ours

3Jane11:11:15

once we exit the time union we can make it mean what we want it to mean

yogidevbear11:11:38

I also think BST is better for daylight fitting into the hours of the day. Plus if we were permanently UTC-1 we would pick up timezone bugs better all year round instead of only for 6 months of the year 😂

otfrom11:11:26

GMT or bust

otfrom11:11:40

or is GMT the London elitist time now?

3Jane11:11:50

oh yeah GMT is the Remain vote

yogidevbear11:11:14

Too soon... too soon

3Jane11:11:17

(low on sleep, high on caffeine and weird sense of humour today)

3Jane11:11:31

yeah… like 4 months too soon

3Jane11:11:38

🚪 :woman-running:

otfrom11:11:38

yeah, you know me

otfrom11:11:29

but then, I'm just naughty by nature

jasonbell11:11:52

A quick ClojureX question, now I don’t work for anyone while I’ll be at the conference do I have to have a picture of @otfrom in my slides by default?

otfrom11:11:06

some might even say it is forbidden

danm11:11:59

Morning morning

jasonbell11:11:34

<<some might even say it is forbidden>> That sounds like a good way to kick the hornets nest then 🙂

maleghast11:11:40

I will not be including a photograph of @otfrom in my presentation, but this is a decision I have made based solely on available time.

dominicm12:11:33

I volunteer to fix all presentations missing that image

otfrom12:11:42

this is why my avatar in this forum looks so sad. 😉

jasonbell13:11:29

I thought you were just staring out a cup of tea.

otfrom13:11:31

I am, but I'm also wondering where it all went wrong

jasonbell13:11:47

No milk…..

😱 4
otfrom13:11:23

@jasonbell I'll not put milk in green tea, or white tea, or oolong, or Earl Grey. I'm not a monster

jasonbell13:11:57

So how are you making white tea white?

jasonbell13:11:18

Don’t call me a monster if you’re putting Coffee Mate in there…

folcon13:11:46

Afternoon :)…

danm13:11:05

Why wouldn't you? 😛

otfrom13:11:09

@carr0t you are a monster

Rachel Westmacott13:11:23

yeah, Earl Grey with milk FTW!

🎉 4
🍵 4
otfrom13:11:59

I don't make it anything other than hot and infused

otfrom13:11:12

I feel that I've fallen into a den of iniquity

otfrom13:11:20

no wonder I look so sad

Conor13:11:33

Green tea tastes like drinking grass

otfrom13:11:55

sencha definitely does. Other Chinese green teas don't

otfrom13:11:37

I like how you can tell if tea came somewhere via land or sea based on whether or not it is called something like tea or something like cha

👍 4
danm14:11:56

Learn something new every day. My Dad tends to refer to all tea as cha, which he picked up when he was in the RAF in Aiden

otfrom13:11:51

I do like a blended fermented black tea too. Esp w/milk

Rachel Westmacott14:11:11

sorry to change the subject, but does anyone have a good explanation for why comp appears to work backwards for transducers?

Rachel Westmacott14:11:42

eg:

((comp #(* 2 %) inc) 1)
=> 4
but
(transduce (comp (map #(* 2 %)) (map inc)) str [1])
=> "3"

bronsa14:11:57

try to expand the definition of the map transducer and comp and you'll figure it out :)

bronsa14:11:43

comp doesn't work backwards at all (i.e. it's not special-cased for transducers) , it's just that transducers compose a pipeline that operates "inside out"

bronsa14:11:30

rich had a nice slide about it, let me see if i can find it

danm14:11:30

My gut feeling was that it was transduce working backwards somehow, not comp weirdness, but I couldn't have told you why. So I'm glad someone can 😉

bronsa14:11:54

@carr0t it's not even transduce, it's an intrinsic property of how the reducing functions compose

bronsa14:11:36

there could have been a different design for transducers that made it so that they could compose as one would "expect", but that's not what we have in clojure and I very much doubt it'll ever change now

Rachel Westmacott14:11:27

I figured it was probably intrinsic to the nature of the problem

Rachel Westmacott14:11:46

thanks for digging out what the BDFL has to say on it @bronsa

alexlynham23:11:43

fwiw if you roll your own comp in e.g. python it will also read right-to-left

👍 4
practicalli-johnny14:11:13

@jasonbell I have a gallery of 'interesting' pictures of @otfrom I can send you (I can only send you the ones that are safe for work though).

jasonbell14:11:27

It was the word interesting, especially when quoted…. 🙂

practicalli-johnny14:11:16

That's exactly the expression that @otfrom did when I showed them at ClojureX a few years ago 😂

3Jane14:11:28

did you take a picture of that reaction as well?

jasonbell15:11:22

How old exactly do you think I am @lady3janepl? 🙂

3Jane15:11:29

somewhere between 0 and 100, with a rounding error wrapper applied

jasonbell15:11:52

Not far off 🙂

Rachel Westmacott15:11:59

between 0 and 100 isn’t actually correct?

jasonbell15:11:36

Are you saying I’m either older than 100 or not born?

3Jane15:11:43

depends on expected answer type

3Jane15:11:10

try to return { years: 70, months: 3, days: 10 } and see the exception when the caller wanted a years-in-int 😄

thomas15:11:33

for @jasonbell you need year-in-long... ints are big enough....

🕺 4
thomas15:11:46

🚪 :man-running:

thomas15:11:03

aren't even

jasonbell17:11:03

@thomas you do remember we’ll be in the same building in a few weeks time? 🙂

alexlynham22:11:44

I know I’m late to the tea party but I play brown privilege:tm: & argue all fermented black tea should have milk

alexlynham23:11:10

although I realise this is… problematic outside of chai 😂

alexlynham23:11:59

speaking of tea though - the best thing in china besides the trains and fish dishes was probably how many different types of green(ish) tea there are

alexlynham23:11:11

^ worst take ever

3Jane23:11:14

I’m gonna advise you to go somewhere Eastern European in winter

3Jane23:11:56

And try hot black tea with lemon and sugar, and especially black tea with (real homemade) raspberry syrup after you’ve frozen to the bone

3Jane23:11:04

And then give me a second opinion on that universal quantifier :D

rickmoynihan23:11:11

Sounds lovely.

rickmoynihan23:11:25

I’m a big fan of “Whiskey Berber” myself (Moroccan mint tea). I don’t drink it a lot at home, because you have to take it with a tonne of sugar, but it’s absolutely fantastic, especially when served with a dramatic aerating poor. I had it in Meknes & Tangier with orange petals in which was amazing.

👍 4
alexlynham23:11:02

> I’m a big fan of “Whiskey Berber” myself (Moroccan mint tea) 👍

alexlynham23:11:25

had waaaaaaay too much last time I was there

rickmoynihan23:11:36

You can’t have too much 😁

rickmoynihan23:11:53

I gotta agree with you too though @alex.lynham, green tea is ace. Gunpowder is fine; but if you have the palette (and wallet) for it I’d also recommend Gyokuro; which is essentially a shaded sencha. It’s really nice and subtle, much less harsh than gunpowder. Likewise Matcha is great. If you’re ever in Kyoto or Nara go and do a tea ceremony! 🙂

rickmoynihan23:11:28

A friend of ours lived in Nara for many years, and when we visited him he took us to a tea master he knew of.

alexlynham23:11:02

one of the ones I enjoy in the afternoon is puerh

alexlynham23:11:20

it’s like a slightly fermented chinese tea with mandarin peel
