morning folks

otfrom09:11:26

taking this morning off. Going to go for a bike ride

Ben Hammond09:11:59

nice. where are you gonna go? Carse of Gowrie? St Andrews?

otfrom09:11:07

I've not got quite that much time. Just a loop (well a tadpole) part of the way to Perth. I need to make a drop off at Ninewells Hospital on the way.

danm09:11:02

Nice. Just got the bike back from the shop, wish I could do the same 🙂

otfrom09:11:28

I'm heading to here today https://goo.gl/maps/1ot1kTtNYdQ2 and then back home via RRS Discovery. About 18 miles in all (I'm slow, with a heavy bike, but having fun)

otfrom13:11:58

13 miles with the odd hill. It was pretty tiring and I was pretty tired tho.

otfrom13:11:07

I didn't have the time to get to Broomhall Feeds.

Ben Hammond09:11:34

re Vertical Slicing; if you realise that you need to split some functionality off into its own micro-service pool, that is alot easier if code is already structured veritically

Ben Hammond09:11:08

conversely you can bring features into process if you need the tighter processing loops

Ben Hammond09:11:58

this Wednesday

dominicm09:11:44

Scots and Australians are basically the same? 😄

3Jane10:11:23

Cornishmen and Australians

danm09:11:26

Morning morning

danm09:11:45

Finally got the bike back from the shop. Worked out that the only original parts of it now are the main frame and one of the shift/brake levers...

otfrom09:11:46

why so many replacements?

otfrom09:11:00

(me thinks about brooms and ships and pick axes)

alexlynham09:11:04

yeah my cheapo btwin bike still has the frame, forks and front wheel as stock after 6 odd years of manchester potholes ^_^

mccraigmccraig12:11:23

are manchester potholes particularly vicious @alex.lynham? (i've lost a couple of car wheels to sussex potholes in the last decade)

danm13:11:26

@otfrom Well, first thing to go was the shift/brake lever. Manufacturing defect, replaced under warranty. Then within about 12 months the freehub started catching, and the wheel rims would have been ground away by the brakes within about 3-6 more months anyway, so I got new wheels and took the opportunity (as my frame had the mount points) to get disks instead of rim brakes

danm13:11:25

The most recent one the chain slipped off the front chainring because they were starting to get too worn (and one had a bit of a wobble/bend), and in attempting to shift+pedal it back on I tore the rear derailleur hangar, the rear derailleur got mangled by the chain as it came off, and it went into the rear wheel and destroyed 5 spokes. So I had the wheel rebuilt, and the hangar, rear derailleur, and front chainrings, all replaced

alexlynham13:11:40

it depends on the road really, there's a lot of very busy bus routes that become death traps in winter

danm13:11:45

Oh, and my forks got trashed a few months back when I hit a particularly bad pothole

danm13:11:07

Haha, you're allowed to lol at my expense 😉

alexlynham13:11:00

I was lol'ing at my comment but the timing made it look like I was engaging in schadenfreude

alexlynham13:11:12

for that I am dearly sorry my good man

danm13:11:09

Nae worries 🙂

alexlynham13:11:49

why did I not know about this emoji? :face_with_monocle:

jasonbell13:11:43

Possibly because monocle wearing went out of fashion in 1975 and came back when the magazine was launched. 🙂

otfrom13:11:31

@carr0t that sounds like an epic bit of bike trouble. May you nor anyone else suffer that again.

thomas15:11:50

can I remind you all again to come to :flag-nl: and enjoy our marvellous bike paths!!! :man-biking:

👍 4
mccraigmccraig15:11:36

i like hills @thomas - how is :flag-nl: for hills ?

thomas15:11:12

limited I would say... you can go to the very south (Maastricht and surroundings)

thomas15:11:43

but if hills are your thing I would advise against it @mccraigmccraig

danm15:11:47

I do not like hills. I will come to flatland and ride 😉

dominicm15:11:18

Feels very clojurey

dominicm15:11:27

Somehow we're back on topic

Conor16:11:02

My position would be that an object is 'the same object' if there is a direct causal link with the original object, so my grandfather's axe, after replacing the handle and the blade, is still the same axe 😉

3Jane16:11:36

ah! there we go, OOP confusing value vs identity again

😂 12
3Jane16:11:44

🚪 :woman-running:

alexlynham16:11:08

I think I tend to agree with Conor on that, no idea if it's a coherent philosophical position mind you

alexlynham16:11:41

the more interesting question is whether the reconstructed ship is Theseus' ship

alexlynham16:11:46

I think both are, surely?

alexlynham16:11:15

they're just materialised versions of the same abstract thing with a common ancestor, I don't see why... there can be only one

danm16:11:11

Dammit, no :highlander: emoji

3Jane16:11:53

how about this

3Jane16:11:33

The entire Old Town of Warsaw has been bombed to rubble in WW2, and consequently rebuilt based on posh XVIIIth century postcards (aka city landscape paintings usually sold to people doing tour of Europe), architectural sketches etc. Apparently people used original bricks and decoration pieces, if they could find it in rubble.

3Jane16:11:35

Is it still the same?

3Jane16:11:36

Or … if I split the axe into blade and handle, (blade, handle’) and (blade’, handle) … is this a git branch of the axe?

Conor16:11:07

Look, I've played enough RPGs to know that if someone sends you to find three parts of a magic weapon and you put them together, you get the legendary magic weapon

😆 12
dominicm16:11:36

In case anyone is interested, I created a #clojure-uk stream over at https://clojurians.zulipchat.com It's currently just a lonely "morning" or two from me 😄

dominicm16:11:09

I've been having good fun playing with zulip if nothing else 🙂

alexlynham17:11:59

I mean we’re basically talking about iterating over a change stream or constructing an event sourced set of deltas right? Because one can fork and the other can’t…

alexlynham17:11:09

(I think… might need to ponder that further)

mccraigmccraig17:11:30

i'm a PK purist - if it has the same PK then it's the same object, and all the different things with the same PK are versions of that object

dominicm17:11:27

Primary key

manas_marthi17:11:13

Sounds like another cost saver FAAS

alexlynham19:11:54

I know I’ve made it because a French contractor on a project I’m on said the phrase “but you’re a devops!” to me

mccraigmccraig21:11:07

huh, did y'all see the #clojure-<country-code> slack stats (posted on zulip/community-development) - #clojure-uk has about 5 times the traffic of the next most busy, #clojure-italy, and the only others with any significant traffic are #clojure-russia and #clojure-nl ... this surprised me - i had mistakenly assumed that other countries were just as busy as the uk

yogidevbear21:11:59

Stan Lee passed away 😞

jasonbell21:11:32

Remapped my shift key as a control key, the world seems a brighter place now.

practicalli-johnny15:11:15

@U0K1RLM99 I bought a nice keyboard https://shop.keyboard.io/ and it was like plugging into the matrix (slight exaggeration probably)

jasonbell15:11:54

That would just mess with my head.

practicalli-johnny15:11:34

Its totally awesome, the world seems so much closer to my fingertips.. I can even control my mouse with the keys...

jasonbell21:11:19

Now just a way to get a half decent key mapping for sexpr-slurp-(left|right) and I’ll be even happier.
