good moaning...

3Jane07:09:14

What’s life done this time @thomas ?

thomas07:09:51

trying to fix the acceptance environment... an upgrade last night broke it.

thomas07:09:08

and I have no clue as to why it all went wrong 😡

guy07:09:58

morning folks!

3Jane07:09:17

Library upgrades shudder

3Jane07:09:47

I’ve still got morning amnesia so fine for now, thanks ;)

😂 8
3Jane07:09:09

(Morning amnesia being nature’s way of protecting you against waking up screaming)

thomas07:09:46

sounds more than plausible

3Jane07:09:14

Btw Alex had an interesting talk yesterday about serverless, guys! Very meaty.

👍 12
guy07:09:10

hopefully it was recorded?

3Jane07:09:01

I think so, also he mentioned he’d upload slides, and there’s a repo with a code example as well

alexlynham07:09:33

ahh, glad you enjoyed it - sorry I didn't catch you to say hello!

3Jane08:09:20

Nah, I was rushed yesterday, tried to do several things in one evening and semi succeeded 😅 next time you’re down here I’m gonna come over and say hi properly!

3Jane08:09:07

And yeah, I liked it a lot, partly because the area is new to me, partly because you showed how the tech solved actual organisational problems, and partly because you packed a lot into it - I enjoy things that are dense enough to rewatch, reread etc :)

guy08:09:11

nice nice

alexlynham10:09:49

I was worried it was too dense... ...yet also kept facepalming on the train home when I realised things I'd forgotten to say

3Jane10:09:28

dw that’s why you write a series of blog posts afterwards

3Jane10:09:40

and then turn them into a book

3Jane10:09:48

profit 💸

3Jane10:09:06

(no, seriously, that seems like a good repeatable solopreneur type business model)

alexlynham10:09:22

funnily enough one of the bizdev(? I think) people said that to me after the talk

alexlynham10:09:29

I imagine it's true of consultancy

3Jane10:09:52

(and also I’ve just read a book that I could swear started life as this kind of thing, that forensic analysis of code thing)

3Jane10:09:12

(Can’t remember if the author was a consultant before, but he’s grown the tool into a consultancy. Makes sense, having a stable niche.)

alexlynham11:09:23

I mean, I did mention at the end that I'm growing the stuff I'm doing day-to-day into a knowledge base to launch a functional consultancy but it's not going to be a today or tomorrow sort of thing 🙂

alexlynham11:09:40

functional + serverless + data is quite a natural fit

3Jane07:09:43

(Memories slowly resurfacing... must run and bury the body, bbl)

kevin4207:09:58

bonjour 🙂

alexlynham07:09:55

yeah a dep change while working on the train broke one of my projects

thomas08:09:55

The keycloak docker container we used was removed (it was the keycloak AND postgres container) and now we need to use the keycloak + postgres/mysql/h2/mariadb container and it should be configurable which one you use... but it doesn' work for some reason. it just uses the H2 db as default and not the postgres as I have specified. 😡:face_with_symbols_on_mouth:😫😠

maleghast08:09:14

@thomas - Oh dear that sounds unpleasantly FIAT-ish... How has this come to pass..?

maleghast08:09:17

Morning All!

thomas08:09:42

someone decided it was a good idea to delete docker containers that people depend up on.

firthh08:09:03

It’s leftpad all over again 😛

😂 4
thomas08:09:15

it is indeed

thomas08:09:41

hence me being rather angry!!!

alexlynham08:09:49

yeah that sucks

thomas09:09:18

🤞 I might have found the cause of the breakage... testing at the moment

🤞 8
thomas09:09:41

but if this doesn't work I am going to ....

3Jane09:09:27

take a prescription of one coffee and a browse of https://www.reddit.com/r/AnimalsBeingDerps/ 🙂

thomas09:09:00

ok.. hasn't worked yet... but I am going to go with this theory...

thomas09:09:59

@lady3janepl that was nice... thank you

3Jane09:09:46

( ’s what I use on particularly bleak mornings )

thomas09:09:46

I think after this I need quite a big dose of it in order to recover

alexlynham10:09:42

some of the folks at my old work read it and rate it as well

👌 8
alexlynham10:09:01

I wish it had been around when I first started

kevin4210:09:40

I'm currently reading it too, and I like it, I'm reading it sequentially atm as it's been a while since I did something with Clojure but I think there's several way to read the book depending on your level.

👍 12
Sam H10:09:42

Cheers for the feedback 🙇

thomas12:09:21

ps. I think I have found a solution to my problem... updating to the latest version of keycloak (and migrating some !@#$) seems to do the trick.

thomas12:09:42

but haven't deployed it on acceptance yet. so we'll see how that goes.

otfrom12:09:50

today feels like a very good day to be indoors if you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland

mccraigmccraig12:09:30

it's a pretty good day to be indoors in sussex too. although i shall be ignoring that in a couple of hours and heading out the door for a last meander prior to the london2brighton off-road

👍 4
mccraigmccraig13:09:35

i've not done it before, but its probably not as gruelling as the south-downs way, which has a fair bit more climbing

thomas14:09:13

sounds good!

otfrom12:09:29

I'm thinking about a 25 mile thing along the Tay at the end of September. I'm not quite sure what has happened to me.

3Jane12:09:03

clearly, you’re on a roll

4
3Jane12:09:18

🚪 :woman-running:

otfrom13:09:59

that, that was terrible. I approve. 😂

alexlynham12:09:25

a good medium length cycle is a great thing

alexlynham12:09:35

time to think

thomas12:09:30

I was thinking about cycling the 25k into work one day...

danm13:09:41

Need to drop the bike in on Sunday to get them fitted on Monday (trued etc, taking the opportunity for a gear and brake check at the same time because i'm lazy)

mccraigmccraig13:09:40

@carr0t my latest gear geekery is tubeless - seems great so far

danm14:09:44

These ones are tubeless compatible, but I don't have a pump that'd work with them

danm14:09:55

Unless you can use those little gas canister things with tubs

mccraigmccraig14:09:44

once you've pumped 'em up the first time, a regular pump will do... i think gas canisters are fine with tubeless

mccraigmccraig14:09:08

tubs - those are the old glue-on things aren't they ?

mccraigmccraig14:09:28

it worked a treat with my massive 27.5/2.6" tyres, so should be fine with anything on a road bike (since much smaller volume)

danm14:09:29

tubs/tubeless

danm14:09:08

Aah, no 🙂

alexlynham14:09:59

I thought that was a kubernetes joke for a second 😂

thomas14:09:37

I hadn't had a puncture... yet... 🤞

danm14:09:03

I used to use Conti GP4000s and I got about a puncture a fortnight on Manchester's roads

danm14:09:38

The tyres were just far too soft. Every weekend I'd go over them with a pair of tweezers and find 10-15 hunks of glass that needed pulling out

danm14:09:08

I changed to Conti 4 Seasons and have had much fewer issues. They've got a kevlar layer or something

alexlynham14:09:54

go for gatorskins

alexlynham14:09:59

extra weight but worth it

danm15:09:31

I had Gatorskins

danm15:09:00

They were great, but it's not impossible to hole one and if you get a bit low on air it's still perfectly possible to pinch puncture the tube

danm15:09:35

And then it's practically impossible to get the tyre off the rim, fix/replace the tube, then get it all back together again, on the side of the road, in reasonable time

danm15:09:20

I'll take a small increased chance of punctures (like, I've had 1 in almost a year now on 4 Seasons) but a much easier time getting the tyres on and off when they do happen

danm15:09:00

Also that one I did have I'm not convinced Gatorskins would have helped

danm15:09:45

I went over a 1.5 inch nail with a very wide head that someone had left upright in the road. I suspect some... person... had put it there hoping to hole a car's tyre for shizzles

danm15:09:06

It went right through my tyre, through the tube, and tore chunks out of the aluminium of the inside of the rim

danm15:09:59

I had to strip off the rim tape, hammer and then sand the inside of the rim back to some semblance of smoothness, then replace the rim tape

Conor15:09:38

This all sounds like a right hassle Dan, you are confirming my decision not to bother learning how to ride a bike as a child was correct
