Bore da pawb
after my current gig I wanna remote for a while... there seem to be more remote clj things these days too
you're clojuring aren't you?
I am for this gig. But it's really hard to get any remote contracts at all let alone Clojure
morning!
a reminder we have great talks this month at Signal Media from their engineers on visualising their AI system in Clojure and keeping it running. Alex Lynham will also be sharing experiences with Serverless Clojure - Tuesday 18th September https://www.meetup.com/London-Clojurians/events/rpbqcpyxmbgb/
mine's just 25 mins of complaining about the AWS docs and then a joke about emacs
Down in the big smoke @alex.lynham? Work stuffs, or...?
uhm so I'll be talking about the cljs serverless stuff I've been hacking around with & how that's informed the larger python thing at the day job, but it's not for work per se 🙂
just that I think serverless and FP go together quite naturally and it's a good opportunity to put our tools and practices more into the mainstream so we should get more interested in using it 🙂
Aah, so you're going down to London specifically for the presentation? When I've done meetup talks or attended down there before it's been because I happened to be in the area for work 🙂
yeah I rarely get down so it'll be good to see, esp as we do LL up in mcr
like, no surprises but it turns out when you reduce everything down to a few lines of code and some deployed components most of the gotchas are actually with how AWS (`s/AWS/your cloud provider/`) works
and testing your code etc becomes about replicating observed behaviour and the quirks of stuff like API gateway etc
though tbf for my stuff I now dev against a deployed dev
stage of the endpoints so that's a lot easier than work where I think the platform team would have 3 cows:
1) you're using node?
2) you're using cljs on top of node??
3) you're developing against a deployed API???
@carr0t you know lambda lounge next month is intro to - if you're onboarding new folk could be good to sync on that 🙂
does anyone here have strong opinions on desk-attached monitor mounts?
@U0FR9C8RZ I have an affinity to ThingyClub, they seem to be the most robust, especially if you go for the gas powered option.
my current setup uses https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B013K9NKGI/ which allows me to have a standing or sitting position with a nice ultrawidescreen 37" monitor
that looks nice
how long have you had it?
30th june 2016, so over two years.. I added a second laptop arm, so now have two laptops and one large monitor.
if you want to see pictures https://twitter.com/jr0cket/status/1018434560663654400 but beware of the cat
ooooh, tell me about your keyboard!
@U0FR9C8RZ it's a Model01 from http://keyboard.io and it is wonderful. It's a mechanical keyboard with shaped keycaps and a minimum number of keys. The function keys add layers to the keymap, changing what the keys do (eg. FN key with hjkl act as arrow keys so you can pretend you are using vim everywhere). Oh, it's made with a raspberry pi so it's totally programmable too. The cat is an optional extra :)
ooh that's actually really nice
I've been eyeing the ergodox ez
@alex.lynham i was going to get an ergodox until I saw the http://keyboard.io model01. I like the contours of the keycaps, the arrangement of the thumb keys and the easier way to program the keyboard. The model01 feels much more designed and better engineered to me. The ergodox is a bit more customisable in regards to swapping out key switches, but that isnt something I wanted to customise.
ah fair
with that monitor mount, what size monitor is that?
need to get a new monitor too so maybe this is an opportunity to get that as well
@alex.lynham its a 34" LG ultrawide curved monitor... I splashed out. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01BFH1AIM/ The only downside with the monitor is only 2 hdmi sockets and hdmi is version 2.0 and amazon prime requires hdmi version 2.1 to play things in full HD (crazy)
The monitor is fairly close to the specified weight limit of the monitor arm, but in over 2 years of regular use I havent had any problems with the arm taking the weight, even when I move it around.
that monitor looks great
probably too rich for my blood mind you
was looking at https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dell-U2715H-inch-Monitor-Black/dp/B00PRCRWRU
@alex.lynham this one’s only slightly more, but looks to have more inches and pixels: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-LU32J590UQUXEN-32-Inch-Ultra-Monitor/dp/B07BVXGBHT/ref=sr_1_3?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1536229275&sr=1-3&keywords=4k+32+inch+monitor
ooh you're right
gosh though
monitor shopping is a rabbit hole
hmmm now I'm torn
which of these widgets is the correct widget?!
omg... I want this.... 38" curved ultrawide... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01MYN3X0X/ very expensive but I'm worth it 🙂
that's a monitor gone mad 😉
you could save £300!
it says on that listing that your monitor is ~8kg @U05254DQM but the thingy only holds 5kg per arm..?! (5kg seems low for a monitor)
weight includes the monitor stand, which you dont need when using the arm
ahaaa
If I had a penny for every time I wanted to make the "serverless = someone else's server" joke
if I don't have to manage it, call it a  for all I care 😄
@conor.p.farrell my Irish is even worse than my Scottish, you'll have to translate that one for me. 🙂
