bonjour, happy Friday

Rachel Westmacott08:08:40

(At the risk of appearing spammy, my company are hiring and I’ve posted a link in #jobs for those who are interested. As we’re looking for people near London I just thought I’d mention it in here - but all follow up chat via DM or #jobs please.)

Sam H09:08:35

is the actual office in London? Bit confused when you mention near London

guy09:08:25

Strategic Blue
3 More London Riverside
London SE1 2RE
United Kingdom
That looks like their office address but good question

Sam H10:08:24

commuting distance from London adds more to the confusion 😕

3Jane10:08:38

(otoh that means they’re open to people who can’t afford to live in London, like families)

👀 4
Rachel Westmacott10:08:25

We’re about a five minute walk from London Bridge station.

Rachel Westmacott10:08:01

Most devs work in the office about half the time, and from home the other half.

agile_geek12:08:28

I'm not looking for a permanent role but once again excluded by London-centric bias!

agile_geek12:08:53

Although I am literally right around the corner at my current client right now (and for next 3 weeks before I go remote)

guy09:08:16

Morning Happy Friday all 😄 parrot

dominicm09:08:01

Rather tired 😴

rhinocratic10:08:25

It probably ought to be blindingly obvious to me, but what's the interpretation of your o/ sigil, @lady3janepl?

3Jane10:08:08

it’s a text version of 🙋

3Jane10:08:14

head, waving arm

3Jane10:08:21

and then you can wave back with \o

3Jane10:08:26

old irc habits 🙂

rhinocratic10:08:39

Ah - thank you! \o

guy12:08:30

(fn [v v']
       (merge v v'))
How would you read the variables here, V and ?

agile_geek12:08:14

@guy do you mean how would you pronounce the second variable?

guy12:08:22

yes sorry

guy12:08:18

Cool so could you infer anything from the fact its called v and v prime?

agile_geek12:08:23

depends on context

Sam H13:08:44

I’m pretty sure it’s just implementing this: https://kafka.apache.org/10/javadoc/org/apache/kafka/streams/kstream/ValueJoiner.html in which case it’s just the 2 different values. Using v' is a bit confusing

guy14:08:37

thanks @U0DPX8ZQB ❤️

agile_geek12:08:49

I might guess v prime was a new 'version' or 'delta' of v but that's a guess

guy12:08:02

alright nice one thanks

agile_geek12:08:24

I defer to anyone with better math than me.....which is literally anyone!

😄 4
3Jane12:08:38

v prime, and depending on context: v after transformation (think: vector), or derivative of v, or … minutes I think (I’m more used to inches being double-prime)

agile_geek12:08:07

Seems like I did learn something from reading white papers! maybe the only thing

3Jane12:08:43

why are they called white papers anyway?

3Jane12:08:48

they’re always covered in print 😞

😂 4
agile_geek12:08:52

Cos they're white?

agile_geek12:08:26

What's black and white and read all over?

3Jane12:08:05

After you tell her a nun joke?

3Jane12:08:49

you’re welcome, your laptop is now upgraded to Mackintosh

😂 12
3Jane12:08:25

TOP OF THE LINE! XD

😂 8
3Jane12:08:22

Also: look up Goddess Squat (category: urban lore.)

guy12:08:52

i cant handle these puns

jasonbell12:08:02

Goddess Squat.....

3Jane12:08:24

er… or maybe don’t. I don’t know what your search engine is tuned to XD

3Jane12:08:09

(Being of the 90s teenage fringe generation, I was taught to ask Squat for a parking spot - note the rhyme, very deliberate - and when the request is granted, pay with a nun joke. Living next to a typical British small town, under-supplied with parking spaces and over-supplied with commuters, leaves you with a ready supply of nun jokes.)

jasonbell12:08:03

@lady3janepl one of a rather open mind so you don't have to worry too much

3Jane12:08:27

you might be, but it’s work hours

3Jane12:08:11

I don’t want to be held responsible ;D

jasonbell12:08:26

So far so not offended, try harder (and I work from home 🙂 )

maleghast12:08:08

Morning All

👋 8
jasonbell12:08:29

@lady3janepl Contrary to popular belief I'm an adult (just a child adult) so I'm accountable for what I type into Google and DuckDuckGO 🙂

We are all children at heart.

3Jane13:08:50

give one some lego blocks and they’ll give you back a framework.

jasonbell13:08:14

Well that's Ruby developers for you..... 😉

otfrom13:08:15

isn't that bash or perl?

3Jane13:08:33

perl is plasticine, because there’s always a way to do what you want, and it’s very hard to modify afterwards. Also, no perl script is ever the same as others.

3Jane13:08:02

@agile_geek you do that, integrate with graalvm, then watch the money roll in. “Tired of your rails framework? Upgrade to flask! use with hibernate!”

👍 12
jasonbell13:08:41

Oh the joys of being an old fart like me, I still find Perl lovely.

8
thomas13:08:22

haven't done perl for a loooong time... almost 10 years or so I think....

3Jane13:08:40

after having to write bash scripts that also handle unix utility syntax differences between various OS versions… perl is lovely. </grump>

mccraigmccraig14:08:28

question: is this good or evil: (let [[a b] (repeatedly #(rand-int 100))] [a b]) (in particular, destructuring values directly from an infinite seq)

bronsa14:08:42

it's perfectly fine

bronsa14:08:13

I use it often with e.g. (repeatedly gensym)

bronsa14:08:48

if you want to be precise you can use the (repeatedly n f) form but meh

mccraigmccraig14:08:48

that's pretty similar to the use-case i've got - although it's uuids for a test here... (repeatedly n f) seemed more fragile, 'cos i often end up binding more values as i expand the test

mccraigmccraig14:08:54

i guess it's roughly the same as the classic (let [[x & xs] some-seq] ...)

guy14:08:40

 TIL;

danm14:08:59

I still like Perl, but a lot of the scripting stuff I used to do in Perl these days I do in Python

danm14:08:19

I still turn to Perl for excessive text file processing though

sundarj15:08:06

i like the design principles behind perl

3Jane15:08:54

so you see the problem is that many “default” images don’t have python, but they always have bash, and you can be pretty sure they will have perl

3Jane15:08:20

then again, sometimes they have perl, but they don’t have the X module that you’d really like to use, so mixed blessings there 😄

3Jane15:08:59

…also, sorry for temporarily converting clojure-uk to old-language-appreciation-uk XD

sundarj15:08:54

perl 6 is younger than clojure 😛

3Jane15:08:44

…but is not the version installed everywhere 🙂

3Jane15:08:10

afaik they’ve had an even larger 5/6 version split than python between 2/3

danm15:08:20

Is 6 even actually 'out' yet?

thomas15:08:21

what is this Perl 6 thing? I have heard about it... but never seen it in the wild.

3Jane15:08:31

hey, what’s this year’s EGX best of?

guy15:08:45

you’re going egx too?

guy15:08:02

ah i missed >books tickets for EGX Thurs 20th Sept

3Jane15:08:26

not yet, but I could be convinced

guy15:08:06

🤷 its a lot of cash for a games thing imo

3Jane15:08:30

👀 4
3Jane15:08:19

I was gonna say this looks like Rezzed, but it is Rezzed, isn’t it? 😄

guy15:08:05

yeah i think ur right

guy15:08:15

I’ve always heard it referred to as egx 🤷

danm15:08:19

EGX Rezzed

guy15:08:39

oh right im going to the Birmingham one

guy15:08:47

sorry was getting confused

danm15:08:59

That is EGX Rezzed isn't it?

guy15:08:59

guy15:08:07

dont think so

guy15:08:26

Just different names i think

danm15:08:34

Yeah, I meant the Birmingham one. That's where I'm going

guy15:08:38

ah nice nice

danm15:08:33

But yeah, only for the Thurs. Happened to hear some mates were going, so tacked on with. Probably wouldn't go solo

danm15:08:43

And Thurs should be a bit less busy 😉

3Jane15:08:10

Confusion abounds. Anyway, midweek I work, so won’t join, have fun, shoot some aliens for me 🙂

danm15:08:29

Midweek I work too 😉 Took a day's holiday

3Jane15:08:03

guy15:08:02

im taking thurs/friday off 👀

danm15:08:44
