How's it going @firthh?

firthh06:08:31

Not bad. London is back to the typical grey which makes me sad

firthh06:08:36

How about you

dominicm06:08:23

I still have a little blue up here. I know what you mean though. Not too bad, bit frustrated I can't walk around much still. I figured I'd be up and about by now.

alexlynham06:08:06

morning morning

mccraigmccraig07:08:00

what happened to you @dominicm?

dominicm07:08:35

@mccraigmccraig I had a mole removed between my toes, a couple weeks ago or so. Just an awkward place, so healing is taking time I guess.

mccraigmccraig07:08:11

ouch - that does sound like an awkward place. i hope you are mobile soon!

agile_geek08:08:24

Lovely blue sky's up here near the arctic circle... Have to ask @otfrom how it is north of the wall!

mccraigmccraig08:08:45

i thought you meant the actual arctic circle for a mo then @agile_geek - a good summer with midnight sun is amazing

agile_geek08:08:27

No just that there are an amazing number of people who think Newcastle is right next door to places like Sheffield ... not 130 miles further north!

agile_geek08:08:11

I'm trying to encourage ppl to come to Build IT Right and see the city for themselves! gratuitous plug

Conor08:08:58

Newcastle is p. nice, I liked the Baltic Centre

alexlynham08:08:15

yeah baltic is ace

otfrom08:08:39

20C and sunny with a few clouds in Dundee

Conor08:08:16

If I lived in Dundee I'd commemorate the Tay Bridge Disaster every year with a reading of McGonagall's poem

mccraigmccraig08:08:32

it's ☁️ in :flag-wales:

otfrom08:08:10

@conor.p.farrell the whole city goes down to the waterfront every day to do that

Conor08:08:45

I should have gone when I lived in St Andrews

otfrom08:08:40

it was a bit weird at first but after we met Silv'ry Tay we understood and joined in

rickmoynihan09:08:01

@conor.p.farrell: If you have the stomach for it… Lets face it Rabbie Burns gets the once a year treatment, and he was a good poet! Once, ever! Is more than enough for McGonagall! 😆

rickmoynihan09:08:20

I do still miss my daily walks by the Tay. The river and bridge are stunningly beautiful.

Conor09:08:41

A book of his poems has pride of place on my bookshelf

rickmoynihan09:08:40

The V&A should be opening soon. Will definitely need to pay it a visit when I’m next over that way.

rickmoynihan09:08:58

it’s a pretty awesome building they’ve been throwing up: https://www.vandadundee.org/news-and-blog/blog/opening-date

guy09:08:08

Morning!

otfrom09:08:52

@rickmoynihan it is worth going to the Jute Musuem too if you are ever up here.

rickmoynihan09:08:22

@otfrom: Do you mean the verdant works?

otfrom09:08:40

but the museum rather than the gin distillery. 😉

otfrom09:08:11

we live about a 5 min walk away

rickmoynihan09:08:18

😁 Yeah the museum is pretty great… especially if you get a demo of the machinery.

otfrom09:08:21

in the heart of Blackness

otfrom09:08:30

ooh, I didn't get a demo. I'll have to go back.

rickmoynihan09:08:35

yeah you will… I used to live around the corner from there too.

rickmoynihan09:08:15

You need to check the times they do it before you go.

rickmoynihan09:08:59

@otfrom: have you been to the mcmanus galleries yet? They’re worth a visit.

otfrom09:08:35

I've been quite a few times. I like visiting free museums in short bits and really taking in just a few things.

otfrom09:08:46

we've been round the Discovery musuem too

rickmoynihan09:08:07

yeah, thankfully none of them are too big

otfrom09:08:22

and up the Law and Broughty Castle (which is my Dundee zombie apocalypse fortress plan)

rickmoynihan09:08:24

not that too big is a problem

rickmoynihan09:08:57

Well you’re fair seeing the place… The view from the Law is great.

otfrom09:08:06

the DCA keeps bringing in things to have an opinion about as do the universities and a few of the other local galleries. There is a lot of art and culture for only 150k people.

rickmoynihan09:08:35

yeah, Dundee has a lot going for it

otfrom09:08:17

just don't tell anyone. Everyone in Scotland thinks it is Scumdee and that means we can actually afford a house here. 😉

rickmoynihan09:08:28

Yeah I know 🙂

rickmoynihan09:08:48

These gardens towards forfar are well worth a visit too: http://www.pitmuies.com/

otfrom09:08:28

we finally broke down and got a car so we'll have to drive up there

👍 4
rickmoynihan09:08:51

as is a short trip to Reekie Lynn

otfrom09:08:21

v. pretty. Looks like a good one for Sept when there are fewer flying things around.

rickmoynihan09:08:48

Definitely… 😱 Midgees!!!

dominicm10:08:30

Despite the grey, I'm liking the rain a little, it's brought the colour out in the flowers. Which makes me quite happy.

alexlynham10:08:49

I love scotland but it is cold and wet

alexlynham10:08:58

and Manchester is already pretty cold and wet

rickmoynihan10:08:09

Dundee is scotlands sunniest city 🌦️

danm10:08:18

3 days a year?

otfrom10:08:37

and having just been down in London I don't miss the heat at all

3Jane10:08:58

London’s rainy and relatively freezing today

3Jane10:08:31

Heat: you miss it when it’s gone XD

otfrom10:08:55

@lady3janepl no, I really don't. 😉

alexlynham11:08:08

I'm so much happier in sunny weather, it's enough to make me want to move to Denver

otfrom13:08:27

yeah, as much as I like western Scotland I'm not sure I could move there now. 😉

otfrom13:08:51

I couldn't move to Denver though. Waaaay too dry for me.

otfrom13:08:29

cool and not too dry with a fair bit of sun seems to be working for me. :rain_cloud: :sun_small_cloud:

rickmoynihan13:08:09

Dreich is one of my favourite Scots words

alexlynham13:08:13

tbf I could live with cool and sunny

alexlynham13:08:34

weather I can cycle in with impunity is 💯

jasonbell14:08:39

I just want to live and work from Cyprus. But no flip flops as they are against the law.

danm14:08:38

Which side?

danm14:08:31

Wife's Dad lives in a village outside Limassol, on the Greek side

jasonbell14:08:56

@danieleneal Yes Cyprus I love it there.

jasonbell14:08:37

@carr0t I've sped at 80 mph in a restored 1952 Morris Minor in Limassol, the only time I've been properly petrified 🙂

😆 4
danielneal14:08:10

I've never been - do you have a connection/family there?

danm14:08:11

I love how everyone there thinks motorbike helmets are for protecting your elbow

danm14:08:32

Also meaning if you ever come off the bike you pretty much guarantee breaking your arm in at least 1, possibly 2, places

otfrom08:08:18

I came off my motorbike (went over the handlebars). I didn't break anything but I was glad I had leathers and a full face helmet (otherwise I wouldn't be so pretty).

danm08:08:40

Well yes, but you presumably didn't have your arm crooked through the neck hole and out the visor hole of a very solid helmet when that happened...

agile_geek09:08:43

Yeah, i also cringe at: 1. Riding a m/c in shorts...frequently GF of a fully leather clad man 2. Riding with a large bike chain wrapped around your body.

agile_geek09:08:43

Oh yeah....riding with helmet perched on top of head!

agile_geek09:08:24

I've come off my bike twice...both at under 30 mph and was glad I was in full leathers the first time and in armoured Gortex/Kevlar trousers and jacket (zipped together!)

agile_geek09:08:04

I do worry about coming off my bicycle in lycra as I've reached over 45mph downhill before!

danm09:08:43

Yeah, same

otfrom09:08:44

yeah, I get quite worried about road rash while cycling as it is similar to getting a bad burn

agile_geek10:08:25

Been knocked off my bicycle at 25mph before but got away very lightly. A few bruises, skinned knee and thigh and a dislodged clavical-acromion joint (mainly ligament damage).

rhinocratic10:08:39

Managed to break my acromioclavicular joint when I went over the handlebars on a Milton Keynes redway. Right shoulder is still a couple of inches lower than the left!

mccraigmccraig10:08:20

perhaps surprisingly road biking seems rather more dangerous than mtb, based on the frequency of injury reports i hear from cycling friends in both disciplines

danm10:08:44

I wonder if that's to do with clothing tbh

danm10:08:07

A lot of serious mtbers I know have full face helmets, knee/elbow pads etc

danm10:08:35

And it's only their own skill or lack of they're worrying about. They expect gravel etc and ride accordingly

danm10:08:25

On the road it's a top-of-head helmet, thin lycra, and if you are caning it down a hill and leaning hard into a corner then an unexpected pothole or some gravel when you're expecting smooth tarmac can be deadly

danm10:08:33

Also idiot drivers ofc

danm10:08:44

2 of our guys both broke their backs within 2 weeks of each other, one wiped out on some gravel going down a fast hill. The other had 2 foxes dash out in front of him through a hedge a went over the handlebars

rhinocratic10:08:19

My accident was the result of swerving to avoid a child who charged out of a bush. I think the little "dear" suffered a bruised foot.

mccraigmccraig11:08:49

weirdly all you crashing roadies are making me feel like i should up my mtb safety-equipment game

jasonbell14:08:56

@danieleneal no family, no I just love being there.

jasonbell15:08:03

will have to wait a few years first, teenager and all that.

dominicm15:08:56

@jasonbell counting down the years till they leave? 😄

jasonbell15:08:20

no not at all

dominicm15:08:11

I'm pretty sure my sister isn't planning on leaving the nest.

yogidevbear19:08:32

Any PGP experts about at the moment?

otfrom08:08:18

I came off my motorbike (went over the handlebars). I didn't break anything but I was glad I had leathers and a full face helmet (otherwise I wouldn't be so pretty).
