I am still stuck on java 8. never got round to upgrade.

dominicm05:04:16

I see java 8 as the last stable one

👍 4
seancorfield05:04:10

Looking at the support plans, it seems that the "safest" path is to stay on 8 until Java 11 is available?

seancorfield05:04:22

Given the disruptive aspects of Java 9's modules, I am in no hurry to migrate to it. I figure they'll sort it out in a couple of versions 🙂

thomas06:04:49

what I don't understand is: given the emphasis Brian Goetz has claimed to put on backwards compatibility in one of the talk he gave (conj?) how come it is so broken suddenly.

seancorfield06:04:47

Yeah, I wondered about that. Did it not break Java programs too? I know it broke Clojure programs.

thomas06:04:43

it suspect it has... it certainly broke things that use the java 1.0 date/time classes. while they have been deprecated since 1.1 version 9 actually removed them.

thomas06:04:12

and by some definition a clojure program is a java program and thus it broke java programs

👍 4
dominicm06:04:16

java has decided to match the rest of the programming ecosystem, hence the rapid release cycle and willingness to break backwards compatibility.

seancorfield06:04:15

@thomas Ah, I'd missed the date/time removal. Which actual classes were those?

jasonbell06:04:19

Morning friends

yogidevbear09:04:26

Morning, friend 🙂

🙂 4
thomas06:04:21

can't remember, but there are a few. sometimes if you search for java date/time classes you see things that have been deprecated.

thomas06:04:39

but these things have been deprecated for about 20 years.

seancorfield06:04:18

Yeah, I saw a bunch of stuff listed as deprecated in 9, but nothing actually removed.

seancorfield06:04:12

That's 8 and most of that stuff's been deprecated for ages, right?

thomas07:04:00

yes and I think 9 actually removed them.

reborg07:04:20

Think it's still there

Clojure 1.9.0
user=> (System/getProperty "java.version")
"9.0.4"
user=> (import 'java.util.Date)
java.util.Date
user=>

dominicm07:04:17

The deprecated methods though perhaps?

reborg07:04:21

it looks it's still fully functional (and 90% deprecated)

user=> (bean (java.util.Date.))
{:day 4, :date 26, :time 1524728623176, :month 3, :seconds 43, :year 118, :class java.util.Date, :timezoneOffset -60, :hours 8, :minutes 43}

thomas07:04:27

I could well be wrong... I just vaguely remember reading something about this well before java 9 came out.

practicalli-john09:04:00

Morning. I am talking to JCenter to see if they will mirror http://clojars.org. I'm detailing my progress in the #clojars channel. Reason for the ask is that I am behind a firewall that doesn't give access to clojars, so limits how many teams I can convince to use Clojure (although I have converted some). The company has a very well managed artifactory service that mirrors Maven Central and JCenter. If I get clojars added to JCenter, then it's one important bottleneck removed from further Clojure adoption.

practicalli-john09:04:36

Oh and I just saw that Clojars now runs through a content delivery network (CDN) at https://repo.clojars.org

yogidevbear09:04:25

Morning all 🙂

guy09:04:36

morning!

yogidevbear09:04:53

How is everyone doing today?

guy09:04:02

Feeling a little glum the summer has finished 😔

guy09:04:15

but hoping for sunny weather soon again 😄

yogidevbear09:04:40

It's not too bad out there, and it's still only April 🙂

guy09:04:58

ah we just have grey clouds

guy09:04:12

3Jane09:04:16

but, y’know, Thursday so we’re past the hump 😄

3Jane09:04:40

(it is Thursday, isn’t it >_> panicked calendar checking)

😂 8
guy09:04:24

I thought it was friday today 😂

3Jane09:04:43

sorry to disappoint XD

yogidevbear09:04:16

Yes. Yes it is Thursday

thomas09:04:00

It is always somewhere Thursday  ....

4
thomas09:04:25

or something like that.

3Jane09:04:04

I need more coffee before I can get into philosophy debates, sorry

thomas09:04:56

my level of awakeness has little influence on my ability for debates.... or otherwise

3Jane10:04:45

yeah but like, below a certain level people start to mumble. or make too many spelling errors to understand them

😄 8
3Jane10:04:55

(I had to edit this line a couple times …)

4
thomas10:04:34

Thing is... I can't tell the difference... other people might be able to (depending on their own level of caffeniation/awakeness (?))

yogidevbear10:04:45

I need more brb

mccraigmccraig10:04:11

anyone ever had an AWS instance get completely wedged - unresponsive over network & can't even force-stop in the console ?

mccraigmccraig10:04:46

but how much coffee is too much coffee @yogidevbear @lady3janepl ? asking for a friend...

3Jane10:04:37

not enough coffee: you make typos, but you don’t understand what you’ve just written, so you re-read it again just enough coffee: you stop making spelling errors too much coffee: you make typos, but your hands shake so much that you fix them by making other typos way too much coffee, aka caffeine poisoning: perpetual motion sickness

3Jane10:04:30

(In days of misspent youth I went to a gaming night at a friend’s summer house. We ran out of mugs so we filled a large salad bowl full of hot water and lots of instant coffee and stuck a ladle in it, ending up with a sort of caffeine punch bowl. The morning after was… interesting.)

dominicm10:04:30

I suspect where "morning" is not defined by waking up?

yogidevbear11:04:09

@mccraigmccraig I've "never" had too much covfefe before so I can't accurately answer that question

😂 4
yogidevbear11:04:33

Why are my hands shaking so much?

Rachel Westmacott11:04:59

too much is so much that you start getting migraines and have to quit coffee - which in my case was surprisingly little (no punch bowls for me!)

3Jane11:04:14

morning was defined primarily by when the bus home showed up

mccraigmccraig11:04:45

i only get the migraines when i quit @peterwestmacott and it's so easy to backslide

Rachel Westmacott11:04:52

I’ve had to quit coffee and cut chocolate right down in the last few months. Even just a bite of chocolate would bring on a headache within about 5 minutes.

mccraigmccraig11:04:18

ah, now chocolate is truly the devil's work

3Jane11:04:06

interesting, seems like people stabilise at different levels 😄

thomas11:04:43

I don't drink any coffee and the tea I drink (mostly) is some sort of green tea, so should be 'light' in that respect. and if I drink some coke in the afternoon I have trouble falling asleep.

guy12:04:09

oh i thought green tea was p high in caffeine?

thomas12:04:04

someone told me it was light on it... but I never looked into really.

3Jane12:04:11

iirc it’s lighter

thomas12:04:36

I certainly have less problems falling asleep if I have had green tea in the afternoon compare to black tea.

guy12:04:51

interesting

thomas12:04:55

for me that is good enough.

guy12:04:01

green tea is really nice too

guy12:04:09

you can get some really nice er, blends?

thomas12:04:27

yup, I found one I like at work.

😃 4
thomas12:04:35

so I am happy

3Jane13:04:31

if you want to experiment, try genmaicha

3Jane13:04:49

It’s green (leafy) tea with roasted rice grains, and it smells like freshly cooked rice after you brew it (but contrary to what you might expect, it doesn’t turn into rice soup). I love the smell

3Jane13:04:38

however… https://www.justonecookbook.com/ochazuke/ ❤️ works in soup as well 😄

mccraigmccraig13:04:30

my problem with *tea is that it ain't ever nearly as nice as coffee with double cream

3Jane13:04:23

oooh I know that one!

mccraigmccraig13:04:30

not bad, but not approaching the sublimity of creamed coffee

3Jane13:04:36

(I’m a tea fan more than a coffee fan, but coffee wakes me up so I learned to like it. Such is life.)

danielneal13:04:41

aw man all this talk of creamed coffee

danielneal13:04:29

@danstone can I borrow some cream

wotbrew13:04:47

Yea, its in the fridge

thomas13:04:07

:rolling_on_the_floor_laughing:

thomas13:04:42

as said I don't drink coffee (but I do love coffee flavoured things)... but hot chocolate with cream........ now we are talking.

danm14:04:13

Tea. Earl Grey. Hot.

alexlynham15:04:05

I've got lots of loose leaf tea I brought back from China and it's great

alexlynham15:04:14

throw the leaves in a mug, hot water and you're done

alexlynham15:04:24

leaves sink to the bottom once they've unfolded

elise_huard15:04:59

2 double espressos a day atm, on a dangerous slope

4
yogidevbear16:04:18

To be fair, I probably have somewhere between 4 - 8 cups of coffee a day

picard-facepalm 4
‼️ 4
guy16:04:46

I used to do something similar but i got quite scared so now i’m on like a tea in the morning and then maybe 1-2 coffees

seancorfield16:04:58

Hmm, all this reminds me I need to go grind some beans and make my only-one-of-the-day coffee!

seancorfield16:04:42

Sumatra Batak Peaberry

maleghast16:04:10

@seancorfield - I've had all my coffee for the day, but you are making me want to break my rule(s) ... 😉

seancorfield16:04:02

Would you have been more, or less, tempted by a freshly-ground mug of Sulawesi-Kalosi @maleghast?

seancorfield16:04:28

(my third choice right now is Uzuri African Blend)

seancorfield16:04:20

I buy all my coffee online from Peet's and mostly choose Indonesian or African single source, with a few blends from time to time 🙂

maleghast16:04:06

I don't believe I know... Did some Google-ing to figure out if I was familiar by another name, but honestly I don't think I've ever had it. From what I am reading I would like to drink it... 😉
