@dominicm was it your birthday last week?

dominicm09:12:24

@yogidevbear It was my birthday on the 13th, yep

yogidevbear09:12:56

Happy birthday for then simple_smile

jasonbell11:12:16

morning (again)

yogidevbear12:12:34

So who's still working and who's on holiday?

dominicm12:12:26

I've been off since the 13th

dominicm12:12:35

I thought I was going to do loads of open source, but I played skyrim vr instead

dominicm12:12:46

10/10, wouldn't do loads of open source again

mccraigmccraig12:12:14

working, but last day until new year today

chrjs12:12:31

Work, work, work, work, work.

mccraigmccraig12:12:33

it's kinda fun though - i'm extending my stream-join impl from 1-1 to 1-many and adding join support to my cassandra client

chrjs12:12:03

How is Skyrim VR @dominicm? ❤️ skyrim

dominicm12:12:32

Really great

chrjs12:12:08

Did you play Skyrim before VR was a thing?

dominicm12:12:23

There's a few things which would have made the game more immersive. But this is the first time I've been interested in archery.

dominicm12:12:35

I did, yeah. I've played it a fair bit.

chrjs12:12:18

You might have just convinced me to try this vr malarky.

dominicm14:12:37

VR definitely improves the game over the original. The models are showing their age, but it's still a great game.

dominicm14:12:31

VR in general is amazing. Definitely recommend playing VR worlds (mini games) to: A) be amazed by a native VR game B) get used to the controls

danm14:12:53

I want a VR setup, but I need a new machine to run it first

Rachel Westmacott14:12:43

I’m still waiting for a significant price drop for top end VR experiences. I am convinced that they will be ubiquitous within 10 years, so I’m not rushing to be an early adopter. But I am very excited.

jasonbell15:12:42

I still find the largest barrier to VR adoption is looking a bit of an idiot wearing a huge thing restricting your field of view and impairing basic balance functions, but hey what the heck do I know 🙂

Rachel Westmacott15:12:28

But you can’t see the people laughing at you.

Rachel Westmacott15:12:54

If it stops you balancing then that’s a problem - but it’s not a problem I’ve personally experienced.

3Jane15:12:25

This is something I’ve seen people use to help with balance: https://www.wizdish.com/

3Jane15:12:12

(I helped demo it at one point, friends brought a 3d archviz demo with an oculus headset, and teamed up with wizdish people who had some 3d games)

3Jane15:12:52

(It’s a weird experience since it’s really slippery, like an ice rink. You “walk” by sliding your legs back and forth against the walking surface. Personally it reminds me of those mobility thingies for elderly XD )

Rachel Westmacott15:12:30

it sounds a bit odd tbh looking at the website, but I guess its the kind of thing you can only tell by actually trying it.

3Jane15:12:38

Yeah, I haven’t seen anything that’d give you a full VR experience that wasn’t … odd

3Jane15:12:09

Some other company had those backpacks that you wore along with goggles and gloves as you scrambled around the room and interacted with the environment

3Jane15:12:22

That looked almost like matrix, the backpack was connected to a server with a long, thick cable

jasonbell15:12:23

@peterwestmacott Balance is a problem for me without the headset

Rachel Westmacott15:12:52

I think I saw a clip about one in Japan where a whole section of a building was decked out with sensors so you actually walked with your actual feet and actually moved around. [EDIT: found it: https://vrzone-pic.com/en/activity/koukaku.html]

Rachel Westmacott15:12:50

@jasonbell I guess that makes it extra tricky.

jasonbell16:12:29

Ah you get by, it’s certainly better than the alternative I was given.

yogidevbear16:12:18

Just got back from watching Jack and the Beanstalk pantomime with my son. That was surprisingly enjoyable

Rachel Westmacott20:12:34

Eurgh! I think I’m doing it wrong - I just wanted to create two immutable objects containing references to each other… I’m not sure that’s going to work.

3Jane20:12:35

unstoppable force, meet an immovable object 🙂
