Must. Coffee.

thomas08:11:30

moin moin morning

yogidevbear13:11:17

I'm not sure about this Jade guy troll

maleghast15:11:37

Urgh, morning hard - rendering event calendar in Reagent AND furniture removals all in one morning… Thank goodness that’s over… Oh, not quite - still have to finish the calendar and the rest of the page layout AND start on the next one… 😞

maleghast15:11:53

Still, at least it’s all Clojure! 🙂

guy15:11:04

guy15:11:12

Good luck!

jasonbell16:11:38

@yogidevbear If I have enough beer in the evening of ClojureX I might do an audio book version, I’ll sit in the corner and read it out loud.

jasonbell16:11:44

Who’s Jade?

yogidevbear17:11:57

@jasonbell If I have enough beer, I might sit there and listen to the audio recording as it happens (but I doubt it'll make as much sense as it would without the beer 🙂 )

yogidevbear17:11:15

I'm really looking forward to ClojureX

jasonbell17:11:55

You’ll need the beer, after flights and talking (bafooning) I’ll need the odd beer too (and pizza) 🙂

otfrom17:11:16

@jasonbell Jade is the person who wrote that book. You shouldn't pass it off as your own. Jade will get unhappy.

Accidentally opened a .json file today in Emacs for casual browsing, and was asked why I've not installed a proper text editor 😢 When I explained that I I'd prefer not to install another text editor as I'll use it as a crutch preventing building up Emacs muscle memory, I was advised to stop being such a hipster and just get Atom installed.

maleghast18:11:21

@paulspencerwilliams - Oh God, who are these people / is this person that said these things, and did you give them a nice big slap with a wet haddock?

dominicm18:11:01

In what way is emacs not a text editor?

paulspencerwilliams18:11:16

hehe, in a fit of secret passive aggression, I've uninstalled Intellij on my home machine 😂 I wouldn't mind but he's a good chap, always whinging about being the victim of dogma!

paulspencerwilliams18:11:39

Because it's not Gedit.

minimal18:11:45

in what way is Atom not a hipster editor?

paulspencerwilliams18:11:30

It can be pretty tough trying to stay true to your principles.. Still, I've got a copy of SICP coming Monday.

paulspencerwilliams18:11:47

hehe, yeah, can't get much more hipster than JS + Electron

maleghast18:11:09

@minimal - I was going to ask the same thing!

paulspencerwilliams18:11:45

Perhaps it's also cuz it's graphical which is non-hipster.

paulspencerwilliams18:11:00

I recall a workshop being arranged for the Sunday preceding ClojureX. Slack search doesn't go back that far, anyone know whether there's still spaces? I need to book my Sunday train and am wondering whether to come down early.

dominicm18:11:54

I'd quite quickly lose my very short temperature if someone told me that emacs was only for hipsters.

otfrom18:11:51

@dominicm it makes you a hipster

otfrom18:11:56

everyone knows that

paulspencerwilliams18:11:31

Wow, getting into London is tough for a Sunday morning 😕

yogidevbear19:11:23

I was hoping to come through for the Sunday, but going to be in Milton Keynes area Friday and Saturday and then coaching little humans rugby on Sunday so won't be able to make it through to London on Sunday unfortunately 😕

dominicm19:11:52

@yogidevbear are you joining us?

yogidevbear20:11:02

@dominicm I'll be there for the conference on Monday and Tuesday if that's what you mean?

yogidevbear20:11:15

Oh do you mean the Christmas dinner?

dominicm20:11:47

Oh, maybe. I thought you were talking about this Friday.

yogidevbear20:11:10

What's happening this Friday 😄

paulspencerwilliams20:11:47

Yep, I've found it cheers @reborg. I RSVP'd in the positive, found there's no trains until around 11 (arriving around 2pm), so RSVP's in the negative. 😞 Looks like a great session though. I'm really looking forward to the main conference.

yogidevbear20:11:56

19 people going and 5 spots left...

yogidevbear20:11:50

Any recommendations for a decent Linux laptop for around £500 - £600? Preferably with SSD and about 8GB RAM

chrisjd20:11:14

I use a ThinkPad L460 and it's very-well supported by Linux (and reasonably cheap).

chrisjd20:11:47

Maybe slightly beyond the £600 bracket for at least i5 though (just did a quick spec).

yogidevbear20:11:29

I was looking at the Entroware Apollo which looks very pretty but the price is a little bit higher when changing to SSD, etc

dominicm20:11:01

@yogidevbear you're passing through MK for unrelated reasons and decided to visit? :p I feel like someone who missed the whole conversation.

yogidevbear20:11:10

Hahaha, I'll definitely do that if I'm in the area. I will see you guys on the 1st though 👍

yogidevbear20:11:23

Looking forward to meeting the MK peeps

dominicm20:11:48

That'll be fun

practicalli-johnny21:11:14

@yogidevbear there are second hand Thinkpads on ebay, usually at a decent price. As they are pretty unbreakable (and relatively easy to get fixed if they do break) then its a good way to get a decent laptop for less. The x230, x240 & x250 should be a good price, depending on cpu and configuration. They all run Linux very well. There are also the X1 Carbon laptops if you want something thin

yogidevbear21:11:11

Cool, thanks for the suggestion. I'll take a look and see what's available for a decent spec 🙂

practicalli-johnny21:11:07

Seems like you can also get referbished Lenovo Thinkpads on Amazon too
