morning 😼 mogge

thomas07:06:05

A thought I had this weekend: Would the election result have been different if that dreadful fire had been one/two weeks earlier?

dotemacs07:06:01

this channel should be renamed to politics-uk 🙂

Rachel Westmacott08:06:03

“we should all stop already with our silly spellings and switch to using the IPA ” <-- THIS

Rachel Westmacott08:06:26

imagine being able to read foreign languages (even if you didn’t understand them)

Rachel Westmacott08:06:56

(we should probably write all programming languages in AST too, then Lisp wouldn’t seem so foreign)

guy08:06:10

the barrier to entry would be too high most likely

guy08:06:31

people are lazy i find, so they will just shorten words whenever possible

guy08:06:43

(not that being lazy is bad, its just an observation)

Rachel Westmacott08:06:09

that doesn’t have to a be a problem for phonetic spelling - you just change the spelling

guy08:06:41

but can you still shorten phonetic spelling for text speak for example

guy08:06:23

u r gr8 for example might be difficult to convert. /shrug

Rachel Westmacott08:06:03

although that in fact is closer to a phonetic spelling than it is to a dictionary spelling - otherwise it wouldn’t work!

guy08:06:12

thats also very true

Rachel Westmacott08:06:43

and historical or regional texts would become a record not just of what was said, but also of the accent used

agile_geek08:06:30

Sorry to see another attack on innocent ppl in London early this morning.

agile_geek08:06:18

On a lighter note, my youngest daughter is laughing at me because I'm heading back down to London and it's going to hit 33°C whereas peak temp up here is only 26

guy08:06:47

yeah its lovely here today

guy08:06:54

at least its much windier

guy08:06:03

yesterday was so hot and no wind either

thomas08:06:53

we went to the beach yesterday (late) evening and I even managed to get a little bit of sunburn.

Rachel Westmacott08:06:20

thomas: I’m feeling lightly cooked from a weekend at the seaside myself

guy08:06:17

impressive

thomas08:06:56

yeah... we got there just before 5 and 1.5 hours later my face was quite red according to my wive... but today no problems.

agile_geek08:06:37

Anyone else read the new Clojure characters page ...I learned something I didn't know... namespace map syntax https://clojure.org/guides/weird_characters

agile_geek08:06:11

Having started using namespaced keywords more in maps I can see this saving some keystrokes

bronsa08:06:19

it's only available in 1.9 alphas

bronsa08:06:29

not in any stable release yet

bronsa08:06:35

goes hand in hand with the namespaced keys destructuring

bronsa08:06:17

(let [#:foo{:keys [a b c]} #:foo{:a 1 :b 2 :c 3}] [a b c])

agile_geek08:06:00

Yeah, that's really useful. We had a talk in http://Style.com about the difficulty of namespaced key destructuring without this

maleghast11:06:57

Hello All - Greetings from The Trossachs...

otfrom12:06:20

@maleghast I think you can get an ointment for that

otfrom12:06:20

sorry, easy jokes are easy

maleghast12:06:38

@otfrom Not a problem - really did make me laugh... Things happen slowly in The Glens - we won't have our own internet connection until Weds / Thurs

thomas12:06:40

don't worry @maleghast we'll send you updates via telegram 😉

maleghast12:06:00

Splendid @thomas thanks awfully 🙂

otfrom12:06:09

@maleghast is that where you've ended up since you've moved back to the UK?

otfrom12:06:33

got a google maps link?

maleghast12:06:42

@otfrom It is, yes! 🙂

maleghast12:06:02

We're going to live up here and I will be down in London a couple of days each week, most but not all weeks.

maleghast12:06:12

One sec, will send you a map...

otfrom12:06:15

how are you managing to be in London?

otfrom12:06:28

flights? sleeper? where are you staying when you are here?

maleghast12:06:28

Going to fly down on Sunday evenings, fly back on Wednesdays. Currently using AirBnB for "Private Rooms" (very reasonable in the main)

otfrom12:06:59

how have you found the private rooms? I've heard various reports (from OK to weird)

maleghast12:06:09

I've been very careful, but so far I've had great experiences

maleghast12:06:54

Have a list of "safe" places, and I am going to try and re-use them as much as possible...

maleghast12:06:55

When I have a better internet connection available I will try to let you know who the good ones I've experienced are, if you're interested..?

alexsays13:06:23

I've had some that were really good, one lady that I stayed with a couple of weeks in a row and we'd end up having breakfast & dinner together. Which was nice. Then others are just strange, like the guy who refused to give me a front door key, which meant I always needed to ensure that he was in before returning and then complained about me using a hairdryer at 8am

maleghast13:06:17

@alexsays - The former sounds lovely - I had breakfast with my host trip before last, she was a lovely lady, a retired teacher - but the latter sounds like the kind of "weird" I've bee warned about... 😉

agile_geek18:06:43

@maleghast watch that traveling...it'll kill you, take it from me! Traveling Sunday is probably a good idea. Only reason I don't is I'd only be at home less than 2 days if I did!
