Well, all clear this morning!

seancorfield07:06:11

Well hung... 🙂

Rachel Westmacott07:06:30

…and I thought we’d abolished capital punishment.

Rachel Westmacott07:06:43

still probably for the best!

keithmantell07:06:04

Could have been better hung!

thomas07:06:38

Zach Goldsmith is back in! !@#$

thomas07:06:59

shame about the SNP though

seancorfield07:06:39

So the most likely government at this point is... Theresa May and the ghost of Ian Paisley?

thomas07:06:50

who knows.

thomas07:06:17

in that sense this counts as a bad result. no clear direction either way.

agile_geek07:06:54

@seancorfield I thought so too but sounds like DUP are playing hard ball.

agile_geek07:06:58

In a way everyone lost (although Labour can claim a moral victory and a technical loss)

yogidevbear07:06:42

Yup, someone "wins", but everyone loses

agile_geek07:06:27

The PM's refusal to consider resigning shows that she really only has one card in her deck - stubbornness! She seems to think good leaders refuse to change their minds (and if they do refuse to acknowledge the change). IMHO good leaders listen and make informed choices, admitting they are wrong if necessary?

agile_geek07:06:11

It's what I try to do but maybe that makes me a weak leader?

thomas07:06:35

@agile_geek I think she has changed her mind to often... brexit, snap election, dementia tax, you name it. that is not leadership in my book

thomas07:06:03

and yes. good leaders also listen 😉

thomas07:06:14

and admit they are wrong.

thomas07:06:23

so, complicated I guess

agile_geek07:06:37

She's been forced to change her mind but doesn't acknowledge it. Changing your mind after a convincing argument is good, doing it because someone holds a gun to your head...?

thomas07:06:36

messy... that's what it is.

thomas07:06:07

and as @yogidevbear says... everyone is a loser here.

thomas07:06:30

shame, as it wasn't strictly needed.

mccraigmccraig07:06:33

even worse - obviously changing your mind while denying that anything ever changed ever

thomas07:06:03

that is very bad indeed.

mccraigmccraig08:06:05

ah, yeah, so it was @agile_geek 😊

thomas08:06:11

so... what is next should May resign?

agile_geek08:06:05

What's next? My guess...she'll stay and the DUP gets to have their fun (someone save us!) but who knows?

thomas08:06:17

what about the backbenchers.. they can't be happy.

mccraigmccraig08:06:44

obvs it will be a labour alliance with small-c tory bbs for a soft brexit and and end to neolib austerity insanity!

Rachel Westmacott08:06:57

is that a serious prediction?

mccraigmccraig08:06:10

only in my barely-connected-to-reality fantasy world @peterwestmacott

thomas08:06:57

we can dream, can't we ?

glenjamin08:06:14

I didn’t see much of the scottish campaign, being in safe labour heartland

glenjamin08:06:17

wtf happened there?

thomas08:06:31

SNP lost quite a few seats

thomas08:06:42

but still the biggest in Scotland I think.

glenjamin08:06:23

Oh, i know the result

glenjamin08:06:26

I don’t get why

glenjamin08:06:42

12 seats went tory from SNP, and many they kept were thin margins

jasonbell08:06:49

@agile_geek Oh the DUP…. this is not good at all.

agile_geek09:06:27

@glenjamin my best guess is voters who didn't want #indyref2 ?

glenjamin09:06:41

yeah, that’s what my brief research just now seems to indicate

agile_geek09:06:42

@jasonbell don't you know it!

thomas09:06:26

will nicola sturgeon stay?

agile_geek09:06:41

Interesting that if we had PR across all UK the Green party would have more seats than DUP!

thomas09:06:15

yes, I noticed they had quite a few votes.

glenjamin09:06:45

lost share in my ward, but increased labour majority so i’m not overly concerned

glenjamin09:06:50

(green lost share)

thomas09:06:28

I am disappointed that Winchester remained Con. (and Romsey and Eastleigh) (where I used to live)

agile_geek09:06:35

@glenjamin ah, but they lost share because Green Party policy was to work on a liberal alliance so sacrificed there own chances in favour of other parties in a lot of constituencies

glenjamin09:06:39

not here though

glenjamin09:06:49

they were actively gunning for this one as a viable seat

glenjamin09:06:00

but the national labour campaign scuppered that a bit

glenjamin09:06:17

greens were second last time around, third behind lab and tory this time

yogidevbear09:06:35

So Cons+DUP coalition now. Am I following this correclty?

thomas09:06:30

seems most likely

glenjamin09:06:53

Most of the the mainland knows pretty much nothing about the DUP, or NI politics in general

agile_geek09:06:06

They're in for a shock

glenjamin09:06:37

Presumably the DUP would at least want an easy-to-traverse border to the RoI?

agile_geek09:06:38

Yes that's one good thing

agile_geek09:06:20

But they are racist, climate change denying, misogynists.. in the main.

agile_geek09:06:30

Sound like anyone you know?

thomas09:06:56

hmmmm... let me think...

agile_geek09:06:16

It always amazed me that UK governments in 70s,80s and 90s called out Sinn Fein for supporting terrorists but never really mentioned the DUP doing exactly the same.

Rachel Westmacott09:06:19

why would you be amazed by government hypocrisy?

Rachel Westmacott09:06:43

“If you’re not cynical, you’re not paying attention.”

thomas09:06:47

may I mention Saudi Arabia vs. various other countries in the middle east?

agile_geek09:06:50

I was young and idealistic in 70's and 80's

Rachel Westmacott09:06:21

I’m idealistic now - but I don’t believe that that is incompatible with realism.

agile_geek09:06:38

So another western government may be held hostage by misogynistic, climate change denying party, obstructionist party.

glenjamin09:06:13

apparently CON+DUP would be a majority of 1

glenjamin09:06:34

and i’m not sure what kensington result that’s based on

agile_geek09:06:56

Tory backbenchers may actually be the ones in power?

thomas09:06:14

and they are divided on brexit.

Rachel Westmacott09:06:26

well, whatever happens, its all looking very Strong and Stable

agile_geek09:06:37

40 years of Tory party squabbling about EU and it comes down to....Tory party squabbling about EU....everything changes and nothing changes

mccraigmccraig09:06:28

someone should tell those tories that staying together for the sake of the kids only makes the kids require a lot of therapy

thomas09:06:29

and yet boy Dave things that holding the referendum was a good thing... cognitive dissonance

thomas09:06:45

maybe that should be their next slogan.

Rachel Westmacott09:06:44

they are getting quite good at organising divisive votes now

thomas09:06:08

twice in 1 year

agile_geek09:06:26

Paul Nuttall resigns from UKIP leadership....well he was going to struggle to lead a party whose membership could probably fit in one pub

glenjamin09:06:55

Paving the way for Mr ex-banker-on-tv-far-too-much

agile_geek09:06:52

My favourite manifesto was Lord Buckethead's - https://twitter.com/scottbix/status/873014998179745794 - just the right mix of ironic comedy and some really good progressive policies!

glenjamin09:06:50

the last bit of 15 is my favourite

agile_geek09:06:21

11 is quite cool

agile_geek09:06:15

and this from someone closer to 80 than 16!

thomas10:06:50

makes perfect sense to me!

thomas10:06:59

I'd vote for him straight away.

thomas10:06:13

(not that I ever could vote for westminster anyway)

mccraigmccraig10:06:00

interesting - http://thesun.co.uk appear to have a map of a completely different election result on its homepage

glenjamin10:06:42

they do? It looks about right to me

mccraigmccraig10:06:38

the numbers are right, but the map seems rather blue

mccraigmccraig10:06:58

in england anyway - the tory gains from the SNP aren't there at all

glenjamin10:06:40

geographically it is blue

glenjamin10:06:45

the guardian map is a decent one

mccraigmccraig10:06:41

ah, i think i may have been underestimating the amount of distortion the population scaling makes to the graun's map when i compared to thesuns's

mccraigmccraig11:06:26

in particular, scotland's warping is amazing

thomas11:06:00

yes I saw that @peterwestmacott good news indeed

mccraigmccraig13:06:01

lol @minimal that lord buckethead video

minimal13:06:54

@mccraigmccraig yeah it’s hilarious

Rachel Westmacott14:06:45

I just wrote a macro and it worked first time. 😮

mccraigmccraig14:06:53

i am trying to write a regex and repeatedly failing 😿

jasonbell14:06:15

First a hung parliament, then the DUP and then failing regexs. I need the weekend to come fast! 🙂

mccraigmccraig14:06:19

'sok @jasonbell - regex is fixed now - PEBKAC

thomas14:06:05

@jasonbell cheer up: the weekend is almost here!

jasonbell14:06:19

Ah well that’s a positive at least @mccraigmccraig 🙂

jasonbell14:06:11

@thomas I’m pretty cheery, slides done for Kafka/Onyx/KafkaStreams talk tomorrow. It’s my ClojureX proposal talk run through, see what the reception is like.

thomas15:06:39

@jasonbell oohhhh.... that sounds exciting.. good luck with that.... and I want to see the result sometime

jasonbell15:06:29

Well hopefully you’ll see it via Skillsmatter.

seancorfield15:06:26

Mornin' from across the pond!

otfrom16:06:32

If I didn't moan, what would I do with all my spare time?

seancorfield16:06:11

Glad to know that the UK and the USA have something in common around their popular vote issue 😐

minimal16:06:03

the name's Mander, first name Gerry

Rachel Westmacott16:06:08

of course with more proportional representation there would be more UKIP seats won - they might be the biggest anomaly in that data

otfrom17:06:11

yeah, but PR would change voting patterns so difficult to tell. I like the votetillyouboak systems 🙂

mccraigmccraig17:06:18

well, i'm not the biggest core.async fan, but it did just sort my problems out nicely
